This article examines entrepreneurship in Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, where high population density, a strategic location, and trust-based networks sustain a hybrid economy with distinctive developmental dynamics. The discussion is structured around three theoretical axes: the motivational continuum that links necessity- and opportunity-driven ventures; the alternation between causation and effectuation logics, here read as ‘situated effectuation’; and the popular–solidarity economic infrastructure that underpins entrepreneurial decision-making. The analysis draws on census statistics, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor micro-data, case studies, and government reports produced between 2010 and 2024. Findings indicate that ventures launched as survival strategies may integrate exploratory elements when investment-worthy niches emerge, even while remaining subject to defensive pressures. Formal planning and improvisation tend to coexist, adapting to prevailing levels of risk and information, especially in popular territories such as favelas, whereas community credit networks and territorial reciprocity cushion external shocks and help maintain low default rates. The article concludes that productive-inclusion policies must recognize this institutional plurality and value reputation and social capital as core assets for local development.
This paper examines the ECOCIDADE project, a community-led urban resilience initiative operating in Brazil’s marginalized peripheries, implemented by the NGO The City Needs You Institute. By centering on care practices, circular economy, and grassroots climate adaptation, ECOCIDADE challenges traditional technocratic approaches to resilience. Drawing on fieldwork in Brasilândia, São Paulo, the analysis demonstrates how the project reframes sustainability as a process of insurgent citizenship and shared governance, where informal settlements reclaim agency in the face of environmental and political crises. The article argues that ECOCIDADE’s four-phase methodology—capacity building for autonomy, network activation, policy prototyping and cooperation, collective and intersectional care—constitutes a powerful strategy for territorial co-production. This strategy offers a critical alternative to mainstream climate urbanism and posits that such co-productive strategies, which treat peripheries as sites of epistemic innovation rather than deficits, are essential for the renewal of democracy in contexts marked by deep inequality, transforming vulnerable territories into spaces for radical democratic praxis.
This paper explores urbanisation and activism in Rocinha - the most populous informal settlement in Brazil - to examine how enduring inequalities intersect with newer, conflictive forms of territorial co-production. Using the concept of the [neo-]apartheid city, the paper distinguishes between ‘persisting’ and ‘neo’ apartheid processes to analyse how socio-spatial divisions are produced and challenged through infrastructure. Drawing on multi-method (qualitative-inclined) research conducted since 2017, the study focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructures as key arenas of democratic claims-making. It shows how these infrastructures symbolise both marginalisation and possibilities for collective action. The paper contributes to Southern urban scholarship by offering a temporal-spatial framework to understand urban apartheid logics, highlighting the democratic tensions of service privatisation in favelas, and calling for more intersectional and decolonial approaches to co-production. It argues that granular, longitudinal perspectives are essential to grasp the layered dynamics of inequality and change in informal settlements.
This article examines the Nova Luz Project in São Paulo through an ethnographic and historical perspective that connects urban redevelopment, class formation, housing disputes and the politics of participation in contemporary Brazil. The article argues that the project cannot be understood merely as a failed urban intervention, but rather as a revealing case of how competing expectations about city centres, citizenship, modernity and public participation collide in unequal urban contexts. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in São Paulo, newspaper coverage, policy documents and anthropological literature on Brazilian cities, the article analyses how the Luz region became simultaneously represented as a site of danger, deterioration and urban potential. Attempts to revitalise the area through culture-led regeneration, private-public partnerships and policing strategies ultimately produced growing distrust among residents, informal workers and housing movements. While the project officially promoted participation, many residents strategically avoided public meetings, understanding participation itself as a mechanism through which authorities could legitimise decisions that had already been taken. Avoidance, delay and refusal therefore became political strategies. The article concludes that Nova Luz was never completed because it became politically costly, and that the project exposes a broader contradiction within São Paulo itself: a city internationally imagined through speed and dynamism, yet deeply marked by suspended planning, strategic waiting and incomplete urban futures.
This essay examines literary production in Rocinha, an economically and socially challenged urban community (favela) in Rio de Janeiro, through a geo-referenced mapping of locations represented across analyzed works of various fictional and non-fictional genres. The objective is to undertake a geo-critical analysis aimed at elucidating the construction of territorial identity, which is inherently positioned between a sense of belonging and a mechanism of resistance amid the socio-political and structural challenges characterizing marginalized sectors of Brazil's urban landscape. Employing an interdisciplinary framework, this study addresses issues of civic self-recognition in relation to urban, social, and cultural phenomena in Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro. The research aims to interrogate the cultural work of literature concerning the community, while assessing the role the literary outputs play in constructing territorial and political identity. By applying a geo-referential identification system (GIS), this analytic method aspires to translate aesthetic and literary analyses into an interactive tool, thereby facilitating cooperation between academic institutions and socially marginalized populations.
The utopian short story “Ivy-Marãen: A Terra Sem Males, Ano 2997” written by the Brazilian anthropologist and author Darcy Ribeiro in 1997 and posthumously published in 2008 critically addresses the social and political injustices that indigenous minorities and people of color have to endure ever since the Eurocentrically proclaimed discovery of the American continent. In the scope of this article, I argue that the narrative text is a strong fictional attempt to give the voiceless minorities a voice as well as to dismantle their constantly reiterated marginalization. In his narrative, the author does not only take up the ancient myth of “Ivy-Marãen,” “the land without evil” and at the same time makes it accessible even to unexperienced and untrained readers, but he also displays a vision of future convivialism from a non-white and non-Eurocentric perspective. As will be illuminated in a critical analysis of the text, this social alternative to the present is based on a postnationalism that goes beyond the Anthropocene.
Even though Gilberto Freyre is a renowned scholar of miscegenation theory, not much is known about his poetry. His collection Poesia Reunida (1980) [Collected Poetry], provides a rare glimpse of the sociologist as he addresses themes of women, family, slavery, and nostalgia.[i] Embodying Lusotropicalism, Poesia Reunida embraces multiracial ideology while maintaining a laissez-faire attitude toward the colonized Amerindian and enslaved African populations. Freyre deploys an imagistic vision to describe his memories of landscapes and to characterize Brazilian identity. Drawing upon T. E. Hulme, Ezra Pound, Amy Lowell, and Manuel Bandeira, this study offers a portrait of the sociologist as a poet of substance and describes how he struggles to transcend the limits of his miscegenation theories. Note [i] The first effort to collect Gilberto Freyre’s poems was Talvez Poesia, which brought together his collections and some individual poems, such as Brasiliana Litoral e Sertão, Encanta-Moça e Outros Encantamentos, Agôsto Azul e Outros Poemas Europeus, and África & Ásia, among others.
Commonplace in the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) historiography is a grievance towards the public, as it is acknowledged that most Brazilians ignore the deeds of the pracinhas. Through a comparative case study involving the FEB and the 2nd New Zealand Division, this paper sought to analyse the influences of the Italian Campaign on their literature and remembrance. It was observed that the sidelining of the Italian Campaign diminished the Home Front prominence of the Allied forces. However, this did not lead to a similar grievance in New Zealand’s literature, nor is their division perceived as forgotten. The evidences reveal that the explanation for the contrasting roles of the two units within the national memories rests with the different post-war governmental approaches towards their war stories. In turn, the grievance towards the public is an outcome of the FEB’s ordeal not being captured by the Brazilian collective memory.
With the proclamation of independence in 1889, Brazilian society needed to transform itself to build the long-awaited Republic of liberals and Freemasons, or of liberals/Freemasons. Thus, the period from 1889 to 1930, known as the First Republic, is marked in the country's history. The guiding question of the research is: Did the educational reforms of the First Republic aim at a social and economic transformation in Brazil? Based on Heidegger's Hermeneutic Phenomenology (1967), we intend to critically interpret the public policies of this period based on Paulo Freire's thinking, bringing this perspective of education with a role of change in the subjects who transform the reality in which they live. Therefore, our theoretical framework includes Nagle (2001), Carvalho (1987), and Freire (2001). This approach was made through a dialogue between three central characteristics of the politics of this period: liberalism, nationalism, and positivism; and Freirean concepts: liberation, power, and culture.
Profound anxieties around gender, couplehood and reproduction, as they stand today, can be felt the world over. Simultaneously a swing towards the political right and the so-called culture wars have escalated, curtailing abortion and LGBTQIA+ rights. The work of Brazilian transmedia artist Gabriel Mascaro enters a dialogue with such anxieties and makes a bespoke, utopian proposition: that the abolition of gender stereotypes goes out with neither a bang nor a whimper but rather as a non-event. I call this speculative proposition utopian because it elaborates an unforeseen possibility, a more auspicious alternative to the current scenario, especially with respect to care practices and familial structures under the sway of late capitalism. This analysis of Boi Neon (2015) situates the film in a transitionary moment: a bellwether of the change in zeitgeist that occurred when the forward-thinking of Lula and Dilma Rousseff devolved into retrograde, reckless leadership or, as many Brazilians call it, the desgoverno of Jair Bolsonaro. My reading of this cultural production situates this film as political in nature and decolonial in reception.
Introduction to the Special Issue.
