This study describes the creation and analysis of a small multimodal corpus of British news articles about obesity, where tags were assigned to images in the articles using the automatic tagger Google Cloud Vision. In order to illustrate the potential for analysis of image tags, the corpus analysis tool WordSmith was used to identify differences between newspapers in the ways that obesity was framed. Three forms of analysis were carried out - the first simply compared keywords across the newspapers, the second examined key visual tags and their collocates associated with each newspaper, while the third incorporated a combined analysis of words and image tags. The three analyses produced complementary findings, indicating the value in using Google Cloud Vision in creating and analysing multimodal corpora. The paper ends by reflecting on the method undertaken, while considering how additional research could improve our understanding of image tagging.
Based on a large diachronic corpus, the present study investigates the boundary permeability between transitive and intransitive uses of ambitransitive verbs in Present-day English. Our findings reveal that:(1)transitivity is not a fixed attribute of English verbs and the change of transitivity can be measured by boundary permeability;(2)four types of change patterns of verb ambitransitivity are identified,namely,increasing,decreasing,increasing-decreasing,and decreasing-increasing,and decreasing pattern is the dominant one;(3)the dominance of decreasing pattern reflects the conventionalization and entrenchment of verb transitivity, indicating a"Matthew Effect"in language change.
The research investigated the influences of English derivational affixes on EFLs'lexical access through an on-line semantic decision task. The manipulation of variables came to a 3(word formation:non-derivatives,prefixed derivatives, suffixed derivatives)× 2(semantic relatedness:semantically related, semantically unrelated)×2(L2 proficiency:medium level proficiency, low proficiency). The result showed that 1)The affixes had significant inhibitory effects on the lexical access of derivatives, and the inhibition of prefixes was significantly higher than that of the suffixes, suggesting that the decomposition process might have occurred during the semantic processing;2)The inhibitory effects of suffixes grew weaker with the progress of L2 proficiency;nevertheless, the inhibition of prefixes were still very significant even for the medium level proficiency participants. The research result was aimed to provide more data and evidences for the research of semantic processing and acquisition of English words with complex morphological structures.
Emotions influence the process of conceptual development. The materialization process of Concept-Based Pragmatic Instruction(C-BPI)is the central step for conceptual internalization,in which learners'emotional progressing states and regulating factors deserve further study. Therefore, this study investigates higher-level and lower-level college English students'emotional feedback and mediated factors during their materialization process of modal verbs. The results reveal that the number of higher-level and lower-level students who experienced positive emotions is more than those who were in negative emotions.Tools offer primarily positive mediation to students, while negative mediation could be transformed into positive mediation with assists of different positive mediated factors.Higher-level learners attain more diverse tool-regulation,while lower-level learners depend more on self-and other-regulation than higher-level learners.
Currently, legal translation studies focuses more on the micro level translation principles and strategies. The perspective of knowledge construction can promote the doetrinal nature of legal translation studies.By introducing new knowledge, legal translation has led the expansion of legal cognitive mode and the superposition of genealogy of legal knowledge.By the method of diachronic investigation, this article, taking the transformation and development of China's jurisprudence knowledge as example, expounds the legal translation functioning as knowledge communication and genealogy construction, highlighting that legal translation is an indispensable part of promoting the continuous development of China's legal knowledge system. As legal knowledge communication is bidirectional,it is necessary to make the comprehensive and strategic planning for translating and communicating China's original legal knowledge to the world.
