How resource-based enterprises (RBEs) orchestrate innovation ecosystems to generate green value remains a critical issue. We conducted a longitudinal single-case study of China Baowu Steel Group to construct a process model that reveals how incumbent firms achieve this transformation through the development of vertical and horizontal ties. We identify three evolutionary stages, emergence, expansion, and optimization, shaped by a recursive mechanism between identification of complementor relationships and green strategic actions. Through this process, green value develops across process, product, and service dimensions, while the ecosystem evolves from boundary expansion to integration and leadership.
In the digital age, quality value creation is a critical challenge for manufacturing, requiring firms to shift their focus from internal quality control to quality innovation and collaboration in the ecosystem. This study investigates how, why, and under what conditions actors reconfigure ecosystems to create quality value. Utilizing qualitative comparative analysis, we explore collaborations among 40 manufacturers, identifying three successful ecosystem configurations: manufacturer-led, complementor and customer-supported, and new orchestrator-driven reconfigurations. Through an exploratory multiple case study, we reveal three key mechanisms for quality innovation: improving production efficiency, responding to customization demands, and building disruptive quality value. Additionally, we analyze the boundary conditions through which ecosystem reconfiguration influences quality value creation. We integrate these findings into a theoretical framework that contributes to research at the intersection of digital innovation management and quality management in manufacturing and provides important insights for practitioners.
This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of literature on digital platform knowledge management from 2004 to 2024. Using predefined keywords, 1,787 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric tools, including R-Bibliometrix, BibExcel, and CiteSpace, were used to analyze publication trends, leading contributors, and thematic evolution. Visualization was supported by Gephi, VOSviewer, and OriginPro. Based on keyword co-occurrence clustering, temporal sequence-based associative clustering, and the "technology-economy" co-evolution paradigm, several key findings emerged. The field shows continuous growth, characterized by multidisciplinary integration and strong links to national digital economy strategies. Ten major research themes were identified, such as smart factories, virtual collaboration, and knowledge gaps. The temporal evolution reveals three main trajectories: reconstruction of core elements, development of new platform infrastructures, and expansion of practical applications. Using Perez's "technology-economy" paradigm, the study highlights potential research gaps in the current digital technology-economy synergy and proposes future directions under the "biotechnology-economy" and "physical technology-economy" paradigms. These findings enhance understanding of the field's development and offer theoretical and methodological references for future research.
Purpose Firms increasingly rely on innovation ecosystems (IEs) for value creation, with both orchestrators and complementors playing critical roles. While existing research mostly focuses on orchestrators’ value creation, we adopt a complementor perspective to explore its transition to IE orchestrator and how complementary resource reconfiguration facilitates this process, driving greater value creation. Design/methodology/approach We conducted a longitudinal study of Neusoft, which transitioned from a complementor in multiple incumbents’ IEs to the orchestrator of its own expanded IE. Findings We show how complementors leverage complementary resources to secure a niche in existing IEs. After accumulating valuable relationships and data, they exchange these for technological capabilities through close collaboration and become co-orchestrators. Ultimately, by fostering a shared vision to integrate complementary resources such as incubating complementor ventures, restructuring supplier networks and innovating based on customer needs, they enhance value creation as orchestrators in their own expanded IE. Originality/value We advance research on value creation in IEs by exploring it from the complementor’s perspective. We extend niche theory by examining complementor transition from their initial niche to IE orchestrator. By integrating dynamic capability and niche theories, we show how reconfiguring complementary resources facilitates these transitions, driving greater value creation, thus contributing to the development of dynamic capability theory in value creation research in the context of IE.
With the increasingly fierce market competition, customers’ needs are gradually becoming more complicated, specialized, customized, and personalized. How manufacturing enterprises adopt innovation strategies to achieve value-added products as well as value co-creation with customers is an important initiative for enterprises to maintain differentiated advantages in market competition. Therefore, the creation of service value has gradually become more and more important. The related research on manufacturing servitization has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Manufacturing servitization is the evolution process of manufacturing enterprises gradually from product-dominant logic to service-dominant logic. The purpose of this study is to explore the dynamic evolution of manufacturing servitization from the perspective of innovation strategy and analyze the dynamic evolution mechanism. This study shows the latest research progress of theories related to manufacturing servitization and lays the theoretical foundation for research on the mechanism of the dynamic evolution of manufacturing servitization. This study proposes a three-stage dynamic evolution model of manufacturing servitization: product production, technological innovation, and service innovation. This study primarily employs the research methods of model construction and computer simulation. Based on the Nelson–Winter model, this study establishes a decision model for manufacturing servitization innovation strategy. This study conducts a computer simulation study on the dynamic evolution of manufacturing servitization from the perspective of innovation strategy and draws conclusions. This study is of great significance for manufacturing enterprises in making appropriate service-oriented innovation strategy decisions in the context of the service-oriented transformation occurring widely in the manufacturing industry.
The objective of this study is to analyze how knowledge flows within the new energy vehicle industry alliance impact technology commercialization. The findings will provide valuable guidance for practitioners, managers, and policymakers who seek to rethink, reformulate, and reshape organizational processes in alignment with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The commercialization of new energy vehicle technology holds strategic importance for enterprises and contributes to sustainable development by promoting green and low-carbon transformation. From the perspective of the innovation ecosystem and stakeholder theory, this study further investigates the under-researched theme of knowledge flow in the new energy vehicle industry. According to the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the practical application of sustainable development goals under the perspective of stakeholder theory, based on panel data from seven provinces and cities in China, using methods such as index system evaluation and regression analysis. Based on the research findings, technological cooperation within knowledge flow and foreign direct investment would promote the commercialization of technology within the industry alliance. Additionally, the maturity of the innovation ecosystem within the industry alliance has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between knowledge flow and technology commercialization.

The novelty of disruptive innovation is often beyond our understanding, but the news media coverage can help us understand it better. News media coverage may have a different effect on the audience's legitimacy judgment. Positive news media coverage may get higher audience's legitimacy judgment and negative news media coverage may get lower audience's legitimacy judgment. Besides, different news sources may have a different effect on this process. Thus, from the perspective of news content analysis, what factors affect the audience's legitimacy judgment? Does news reputation adjust the audience's legitimacy judgment? Evidence from DiDi firm, on behalf of disruptive innovation in China, supports these questions and propositions. In line with institutional theory, we make three straight points. First, news coverage shows a significant positive relationship to the audience's legitimacy judgment, user-oriented values and society-oriented values. Second, operational-risk and ethical-risk news coverage show a significant negative relationship to the audience's legitimacy judgment. Third, news reputation partly moderates the audience's legitimacy judgment to disruptive innovation at different stages. Thus, news media matters in a social setting.

During technological discontinuity based on the transition from second-generation (2G) to third-generation (3G) mobile telecommunications, Chinese manufacturing firms were catching up with leaders in the global industry. Using computer simulation, the paper examines the extent to which heterogeneous demand structures and competitive regimes affect technological catching up. The paper shows that - during technological discontinuity - a slightly higher technological opportunity in combination with low appropriability and heterogeneous demand are vital for technological catching up. The complementary effects of demand within different regimes of Schumpeterian Mark I and Mark II models are discussed.
