The aim of this study is to examine the predictive relationship with gaslighting exposure on psychological well-being among Turkish young adults and to test the roles of emotion regulation and psychological resilience as mediating psychological mechanisms in this relationship. The sample of the study consists of 336 individuals over the age of 18 living in Turkey who have experienced romantic relationships. The study utilized the personal information form, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Gaslighting Relationship Exposure Inventory (GREI), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) scales. Data were collected through online forms using convenience sampling. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between the variables in the study, and regression-based mediation analysis (Process macro model 80) was used to test the mediation model tested in the study. When the findings were examined, it was determined that there was a positive and statistically significant relationship between gaslighting exposure and suppression (r = .170, p = .002). On the other hand, negative and statistically significant relationships were observed between gaslighting exposure and reappraisal (r = -.272, p < .001), resilience (r = -.208, p < .001), and well-being (r = -.413, p < .001). The mediation analysis, tested with 10,000 bootstrap resamples at a 95% confidence interval, revealed that emotion regulation dimensions and psychological resilience have a partial mediating effect. The findings show that exposure to gaslighting weakens psychological well-being not only directly but also indirectly through emotion regulation and psychological resilience. Considering these findings, it was concluded that the psychological well-being of individuals exposed to gaslighting should be supported not only through awareness programs but also through emotion regulation and psychological resilience skills.
Forming close relationships, a crucial developmental task during young adulthood, is considered to play a significant role in individuals’ mood disorder. Individuals who self-silence themselves to maintain relationships and avoid relational conflict experience psychological distress over time. Individuals who sacrifice themselves to maintain relationships are also thought to be susceptible to gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation. Self-silencing, which prioritizes the partner’s wishes, and gaslighting, which is characterized as an insidious form of bullying that links individuals to question their own thoughts, perceptions, and feelings during the relationship process, are thought to impact an individual’s mental health. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between self-silencing, gaslighting, and psychological distress, as well as examine the mediating role of gaslighting. The participants of the study consisted of 333 women, aged between 20 and 40, who involved in a romantic relationship. Personal information form, silencing the self scale, gaslighting relationship exposure inventory, and depression, anxiety, stress scale-21 were utilized to participants. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between the study variables. Regression-based mediation analysis was conducted to test the mediation of gaslighting in the relationship between self-silencing and psychological distress. Gaslighting exposure partially mediates the direct effect of self-silencing on psychological distress. Higher self-silencing is associated with increased gaslighting exposure, which in turn is linked to higher levels of psychological distress. The current study emphasized that the psychological impact of high self-silencing on individuals in romantic relationships operates through cognitive and emotional processes. In particular, the experience of gaslighting exposure plays a role in the relationship between self-silencing and psychological distress.
Well-being research frequently examines self-esteem, given its substantial impact on individuals’ self-image and perception of self-worth. High self-esteem is associated with positive emotions, self-respect, and a sense of value, making it a fundamental indicator of well-being. Additionally, identity formation is closely linked to self-esteem, with positive identity development supporting higher self-esteem. Conversely, elevated self-esteem helps individuals navigate identity-related challenges. As the relationship between identity and self-esteem is bidirectional, understanding the cause-effect dynamics between these variables is essential for advancing well-being research. The aim of this study is to examine the role of self-liking and self-competence in the relationship between exercise identity and mental well-being. The participants of the study consisted of 140 men (33.7
The paper presents the most comprehensive and large-scale global study to date on how higher education students perceived the use of ChatGPT in early 2024. With a sample of 23,218 students from 109 countries and territories, the study reveals that students primarily used ChatGPT for brainstorming, summarizing texts, and finding research articles, with a few using it for professional and creative writing. They found it useful for simplifying complex information and summarizing content, but less reliable for providing information and supporting classroom learning, though some considered its information clearer than that from peers and teachers. Moreover, students agreed on the need for AI regulations at all levels due to concerns about ChatGPT promoting cheating, plagiarism, and social isolation. However, they believed ChatGPT could potentially enhance their access to knowledge and improve their learning experience, study efficiency, and chances of achieving good grades. While ChatGPT was perceived as effective in potentially improving AI literacy, digital communication, and content creation skills, it was less useful for interpersonal communication, decision-making, numeracy, native language proficiency, and the development of critical thinking skills. Students also felt that ChatGPT would boost demand for AI-related skills and facilitate remote work without significantly impacting unemployment. Emotionally, students mostly felt positive using ChatGPT, with curiosity and calmness being the most common emotions. Further examinations reveal variations in students' perceptions across different socio-demographic and geographic factors, with key factors influencing students' use of ChatGPT also being identified. Higher education institutions' managers and teachers may benefit from these findings while formulating the curricula and instructions/regulations for ChatGPT use, as well as when designing the teaching methods and assessment tools. Moreover, policymakers may also consider the findings when formulating strategies for secondary and higher education system development, especially in light of changing labor market needs and related digital skills development.
The present study adapted the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS) to Turkish and investigated the impact of personality traits, artificial intelligence anxiety, and demographics on attitudes toward artificial intelligence. The sample consisted of 259 female (74%) and 91 male (26%) individuals aged between 18 and 51 (Mean = 24.23). Measures taken were demographics, the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale, and the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale. The Turkish GAAIS had good validity and reliability. Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression Analyses showed that positive attitudes toward artificial intelligence were significantly predicted by the level of computer use (beta = 0.139, p = 0.013), level of knowledge about artificial intelligence (beta = 0.119, p = 0.029), and AI learning anxiety (beta = -0.172, p = 0.004). Negative attitudes toward artificial intelligence were significantly predicted by agreeableness (beta = 0.120, p = 0.019), AI configuration anxiety (beta = -0.379, p < 0.001), and AI learning anxiety (beta = -0.211, p < 0.001). Personality traits, AI anxiety, and demographics play important roles in attitudes toward AI. Results are discussed in light of the previous research and theoretical explanations.
