In this paper, we explore the critical practice of making sense of students’ mathematical ideas. We extend previous research by studying stances prospective teachers adopt, the extent or depth to which they do so, and the types of prospective teachers making sense of students’ mathematical ideas. Analyzing the responses of 123 prospective teachers to students’ different ideas on an ambiguous mathematical task, our study identifies various stances—descriptive, evaluative, comparative, interpretive, inquiry-based, connective, and projective—and explores the complexity of attributing value, meaning, and significance to student ideas. Our findings offer insights into various types of making sense of students’ ideas and suggest that different kinds of attributions are at play for the purposes of observation, assessment, understanding and projection/prediction.
In this study we address two issues related to problem-posing tasks in teacher education: (i) the characterization of the specialized knowledge mobilized by prospective teachers when carrying out these tasks and (ii) the identification of the prospective teachers’ pedagogical intentions in making adaptations to textbook problems. We asked prospective teachers to outline their suggestions for transforming a multiplicative problem so as to “promote the understanding” of their potential pupils. We then carried out a content analysis of their responses using the Mathematics Teachers’ Specialized Knowledge model of teachers’ specialized knowledge and identified their pedagogical intentions by means of the constant comparison method. The results show that prospective primary teachers mobilized both mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge in their responses to the problem reformulation task. Further, four distinct pedagogical intentions emerged that drew on different interpretations of the task prompt, and this influenced the type of transformation the prospective primary teachers suggested and the knowledge they mobilized in their answers.
Lesson planning makes possible organizing a teaching sequence coherent with the expected knowledge. The purpose of this work is to characterize the knowledge that a secondary mathematics teacher puts into play when designs class lessons about quadrilaterals. We present a case study in which the categories of the Mathematics Teacher Specialized Knowledge are used to show the knowledge he/she uses in the designing of the aforementioned lesson plans. The outcomes show the relevance of the decisions taken by the teacher during teacher planning related to the didactical and resources.
This paper studies the knowledge developed by a group of sixty-two pre-service primary teachers during a training session on the definition of a polygon and the mathematical practice of defining. We explore the knowledge developed by pre-service teachers when they carry out a series of training tasks oriented around the practice of defining with primary pupils, within the theoretical framework of the Mathematics Teachers’ Specialised Knowledge model, and using videos of an authentic lesson as prompt. Data were collected by means of video recordings of the implementation of the training tasks, in conjunction with the pre-service teachers’ own written observations as they watched the recorded lesson. A content analysis was carried out on the collected data using the Mathematics Teachers’ Specialised Knowledge model. The results highlight the way in which knowledge of the mathematical practice of defining is constructed, along with the mathematical objects involved in this practice, and pedagogical aspects of defining with young pupils. They also illustrate how a sequence of tasks oriented around a model of teachers’ knowledge can contribute to the development of this knowledge in initial training programmes, and more especially provide orientation about the training of pre-service teachers in the mathematical practice of defining.
Background: The study of the knowledge of the mathematics teacher has focused attention on differentiating mathematics preservice teachers from other types of professionals who know the area to establish specific characteristics that can identify the professional licensed for the teaching of mathematics. Objectives: To characterise the specialised knowledge of the teacher who incorporates information and communication technologies (ICT) in the teaching of mathematics using modelling. Design: Qualitative research based on an instrumental case study. Setting and participants: The study is carried out in a secondary basic education course, with a teacher with training and experience in teaching mathematics with technological resources. Data collection and analysis : The analyses focused on three subdomains of the mathematics teacher’s specialized knowledge model, namely: knowledge of the topics, knowledge of mathematical practices, and mathematical knowledge for teaching, by adapting indicators to the categories of knowledge of these subdomains, integrated with aspects of modelling. Results: The relationships that arise between categories of the subdomains were found and are evidence of the need for the teacher who teaches mathematics to know the subject discipline in depth and to relate it to their didactic-pedagogical knowledge to develop mathematical modelling processes using the ICTs. Conclusions: The construction of knowledge indicators of the KoT, KMP, and MKT allowed us to understand and interpret the specialised knowledge of the teacher when teaching conics, particularly, the circumference, through mathematical modelling with the specialised GeoGebra software.
The aim of this study is to characterise the emotions mobilised and declared by a teacher educator during some sessions teaching the subject of "Mathematics and its Didactics I". Through an instrumental case study and from an interpretative perspective, we explore and analyse how the change of teaching to an online context due to COVID-19 influences them. The OCC model of the cognitive structure of emotions makes it possible to identify and classify them based on the triggering situation and their internal appraisal (own system of goals, norms and attitudes). The analysis shows the ways in which the teacher educator processes information and her coping strategies in the face of the realities she is dealing with. The study provides tools for understanding the objectives, attitudes and conceptions of teachers through their emotions, a first step towards improving the management of these emotions in the future.
This work aims to characterize the specialized knowledge built in a primary teachers initial training class by means of a task based on video analysis. We designed a first phase consisting in a small scale teaching experiment with three students, used to define the referents that would allow to redesign the task in the second phase. This second phase scaled up the experiment to group of students in a teacher training program. The task was based on the visualization and discussion of a video about building a definition of 'polygon'. After the analysis, conducted using the Mathematics Teacher's Specialized Knowledge model, we identified the knowledge mobilized by prospective teachers about the definition of 'polygon' and its elements, about the mathematical practice of defining, about resources and examples to define 'polygon', about learning difficulties related to that content, and about its presence in primary school syllabi, consistent with research literature. This work ends with reflections about how the task allows to build elements of specialized knowledge.
This paper explores how different schools of thought in mathematics education think and speak about preparing mathematics for teaching by introducing and proposing certain metaphors. Among the metaphors under consideration here are the unpacking metaphor, which finds its origin in the Anglo-American school of thought of pedagogical reduction of mathematics; the elementarization metaphor, which has its origin in the German school of thought of didactic reconstruction of mathematics; and the recontextualization metaphor, which originates in the French school of thought of didactic transposition. The metaphorical language used in these schools of thought is based on different theoretical positions, orientations, and images of preparing mathematics for teaching. Although these metaphors are powerful and allow for different ways of thinking and speaking about preparing mathematics for teaching, they suggest that preparing mathematics for teaching is largely a one-sided process in the sense of an adaptation of the knowledge in question. To promote a more holistic understanding, an alternative metaphor is offered: preparing mathematics for teaching as ecological engineering. By using the ecological engineering metaphor, the preparation of mathematics for teaching is presented as a two-sided process that involves both the adaptation of knowledge and the modification of its environment.
