The purpose of this study is to explore early childhood teachers' perspectives on the bridging educational gap, for children coming from low socioeconomic status during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A qualitative methodology was utilized in the study. The data draws on phone interviews with 18 early childhood teachers working in public schools to understand the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic on children living in low-SES districts of T & uuml;rkiye. Open coding data analysis revealed that children's developmental areas are negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Distance education failed because of various parent-, child-, and curriculum-related factors. Children academic gains would not be maintained or supported due to school closure. Finally, home confinement triggered dramatic increase in children's exposure to the screen.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) approach has a variety of benefits for all children as it triggers multiple senses through hands-on activities, experiential learning, exploration opportunities on different scientific topics, and various tools and materials. Five STEAM activities were designed and implemented with fifteen 60-72-month-old children over a five-week period. Each activity required children to make their own designs to create their product, and was prepared to emphasize a particular feature of STEAM education. Instrumental case study was utilized in this study. It was observed that children engage more and spend more time, demand additional materials and use their imagination to design more creative and various products in STEAM activities.
This study was carried out within the scope of a nature education and science camp project. It aimed to investigate the effects of STEM activities conducted in out-of-school environments on teachers’ STEM awareness and 21st-century skills. The research was designed according to the explanatory sequential pattern of the mixed method, and the quantitative and qualitative methods are the continuation of each other. Twenty-three science, elementary math, technology, and design teachers who worked at public middle schools participated in a six-day program that integrated STEM subjects with out-of-school learning. Seven different STEM-integrated out-of-school activities were implemented for six days in one of the central Anatolian regions in Turkey. STEM awareness and 21st-century skills scales were implemented in the study for data collection. A semi-structured interview was also conducted with teachers. The aim was for the teachers who participated in the project to integrate out-of-school and STEM education and then transfer this newly gained knowledge to their students. Both quantitative and qualitative findings support that teacher’s acquisition of knowledge and skills throughout the science camp would support their students’ craft, analytical thinking, motivation, problem-solving skills, and self-esteem. As such, out-of-learning environments should be used more in both STEM and 21st-century skills education.
Each year, Turkish public schools welcome many children who have little to no Turkish language skills. This study has been conducted with the purpose of unearthing the challenges that preschool education teachers are likely to experience while teaching children with low Turkish language capabilities. Twenty preschool education teachers, who worked in suburban districts where Kurdish is commonly spoken, participated in this study. A semi-structured interview protocol that was developed by the researchers was used for subsequent data collection. Participants were interviewed on a one-on-one basis in the attempt to determine how early childhood education could support the development of Turkish language skills amongst such children. Miles and Huberman's [1994. Qualitative Data Analysis: An Expanded Source Book. 2nd ed. Thousand Oaks: Sage Publications] systematic approach was utilised to analyse the data. The findings revealed that teachers are essentially left to cope with this issue on their own, and are generally unable to gain the support or resources needed to teach children the Turkish language. Although they achieve some progress despite these handicaps, their methods were unsystematic, unscientific or were not pedagogically proven.
This research explores the dynamics, actors, and political authority through which early education policymaking is formulated and negotiated using a Gramscian perspective. Drawing on interviews with teachers, teacher trainers, and parents, we argue that the educational landscape in Turkey is driven by a prevailing neoconservative and hegemonic agenda and is mediated by a domestic history and politics that produce a monolithic understanding. We first present the political mediations that shape the interplay between the conservative ideology of the care and childcare market and then tease out the complexities of the top-down policymaking approach that leaves little room for deliberation with civil society and various educational stakeholders. We conclude the paper by discussing the initiatives that allow social access and opportunities in early education along with the implications of how and why ‘early education policy’ seems to be trapped between discourses of the raw childcare market and neoconservative gender essentialism.
The aim of this study was to explore preservice early childhood education (ECE) teachers' expectations and concerns before they started their careers and the challenges they faced in the first year. Sixteen preservice ECE teachers from the same teacher education programme in Turkey were interviewed about their expectations for their first year before their graduation. Then, they were interviewed at the end of the first and the second semesters about their experiences and difficulties of teaching in public schools, and the positive aspects of their work. Although participants were aware of many difficulties in public schools, some of the challenges they faced in disadvantaged school settings, such as infrastructural inadequacies, non-curricular tasks, and material shortages, were beyond their initial anticipation and not in line with their teacher education programme experiences. Teacher education programmes should provide pre-service teachers with experiences in disadvantaged school settings to be better prepared.
This paper considers the perceptions and teaching practices of Turkish pre-service early childhood education teachers with regard to nature-based teaching. Nature-based activities rarely take place in Turkish early childhood education settings; accordingly, there is a clear need to develop pre-service teachers' professional experience related to nature-based teaching to empower them to support children's learning in natural environments. In this study, eight pre-service teachers applied nature-based teaching in a professional experience placement over a period of 10 weeks. Clarke and Peterson's (1986) model of teachers' thoughts and actions guided this study in terms of understanding pre-service teachers' related perceptions and practices. Qualitative data were collected through activity plans and semi-structured interviews, the findings from which revealed that the implementation of various activities using natural materials and the natural environment increased pre-service teachers' self-confidence related to nature-based teaching. The primary barriers to the implementation of nature-based teaching activities were reported as being the attitudes of families and school management, weather conditions and pre-service teachers' lack of knowledge of nature-based pedagogies. These barriers could be addressed by supporting pre-service early childhood teachers' professional development and by affording them more opportunities to perform nature-related activities in early childhood settings.
This research aims to scrutinise the latest education reform and education policies in Turkey from a capabilities-based gender equality perspective. The data draws on interviews with stakeholders and practitioners to understand how gender equality is conceptualised in policy-making and to what extent reforms have fostered gender equality in girls' education. From a policy-making perspective, the data shows that reform has been successful in terms of a tangible, measurable outcome of an increase in enrolment rates. This can be attributed to a boost in the number of religious schools and the introduction of single-sex education featuring a limited conceptual understanding of gender equality, with a focus on closing the gender gap. However, from the practitioners' perspective, little concern has been given to gender equality and constrained girls' capabilities. The paper fleshes out the tensions between policy-makers and practitioners by highlighting the need for a comprehensive and inclusive understanding of gender equality in educational policy-making and developing a capabilities-based gender equality policy that is able to dismantle conservative and gendered structures and accommodate boys.
The Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in Turkey operates two kinds of public school for pre-school education: kindergartens, and pre-primary classrooms. The former are specifically for young children aged 36-60 months old, whilst the latter fall under the administration of primary schools and are for children aged up to 60 months old. An instrumental case study was chosen as the study design to examine the differences between the two school types. The purpose of this study is to compare working conditions in kindergarten and pre-primary classrooms based on the experiences of 70 pre-school education teachers (60 females, 10 males), 35 of whom worked in kindergartens and 35 in pre-primary classrooms. This study revealed distinct differences between two kinds of pre-school education schools, which appeared in their physical and educational environments, administrative styles, relationships in school, workloads and the ultimate choice of school based on these differences.
This study aimed to investigate pre-service pre-school education teachers’ data representation activities in terms of their relation to real life, the appropriateness of the data that the children can collect, the conformability of the graphs required for the data representation to the children's level, and the clarity of open-ended questions asked to children during the activity. Six senior pre-service teachers participated in this study. Findings revealed that pre-service teachers determined their subjects for graph activities related to real life based on children’s interests. They have chosen the data that the children can collect and they used real objects or pictures in order to concretize data for children. Pre-service teachers mostly chose picture graphs as children are familiar with grouping and classifying activities and they are more capable of making and interpreting picture graphs. Pre-service teachers asked effective questions about the activities to help students understand the graphs.
