This study aims to reveal the commodification process of Indonesian regional songs in the “Wonderland Indonesia” music video, as well as its implications for artistic aesthetics, ethnic music practitioners, and the public. The research employs an interdisciplinary approach utilizing qualitative methods and quantitative sentiment analysis of 30,000 YouTube comments. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with the creator and creative team, cultural experts, musicians, and the public (via Focus Group Discussions), as well as a literature review. The analysis draws upon ethnomusicology theory, commodification theory, and the hierarchy of needs theory. The results indicate that the music video serves as a visual and musical narrative, packaging nine regional songs and one national song into an EDM-infused medley. Commodification occurs across three technology-driven production stages—pre-production, production, and post-production—with distribution executed via YouTube. Sentiment analysis reveals a 71.9% positive response. The commodification has implications for postmodern artistic aesthetics, the socioeconomic status of ethnic music practitioners, and the general public. The study proposes a packaging model for ethnic cultural music videos termed “New Media Folk Song.”
The Barong Ket Mask is a famous mask in Bali. As a traditional Balinese visual artifact, it has a distinctive visual character in its shape and color. The color concept of Dewata Nawa Sanggha is a Balinese Hindu symbolic color system associated with the cardinal directions, gods, and symbolism in the Barong Ket Mask. This research is a literature and conceptual study that maps the application of the color concept of Dewata Nawa Sanggha and analyzes the symbolic meaning of color through Roland Barthes's semiotics. It uses a qualitative methodology, including a literature review and visual semiotics. Data will be collected from books, journals, and other publications. Data analysis uses Roland Barthes's visual semiotics to interpret denotation, connotation, and myth. The result is a mapping of the Dewata Nawa Sanggha color concept onto the colors of the Barong Ket Mask, forming a structured symbolic visual system. The colors red, white, black, gold, pink, and their gradations are associated with the color concept of Dewata Nawa Sanggha and serve as symbolic visual media that represent identity, protection, and cosmological meaning. This research provides a conceptual foundation for further studies.
The dysfunction of the pakem rules in contemporary shadow puppet performances has become an important phenomenon that influences changes in the character of this traditional art form. The pakem, which previously served as a guideline for narrative, characters, plot, dialogue, and performance ethics, has now shifted from aesthetic standards to pragmatic interests and entertainment orientation. This shift has encouraged shadow puppet performances to follow market demands rather than maintaining traditional values. This study aims to analyze the impact of the dysfunction of pakem on the quality of shadow puppet puppet performances, focusing on three main aspects: the simplification of sulukan, the shift of authority from the dalang to guest stars, and extreme changes in performance style. The study uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with dalangs, pengrawits, and art observers, supported by a review of relevant literature. The results show that the dysfunction of pakem has a negative impact on the quality of performances, particularly through a reduction in the depth of cultural and aesthetic values that have long been the identity of shadow puppet. These findings emphasize the need for efforts to revitalize pakem in order to reinforce traditional values in contemporary shadow puppet performances.
Damage to marine biodiversity caused by plastic waste has become an environmental concern; thus, protection efforts are necessary. In this case, digital media can effectively convey the importance of protecting biodiversity and increasing public awareness. This research seeks to develop a digital platform in infographic animation media to raise environmental awareness among university students. To this end, this study adopted a mixed-methods, exploratory design and involved 87 students in Indonesia as research participants. Data on environmental awareness was collected using test and non-test techniques. The collected non-test data were analyzed descriptively using percentages, and the test data were analyzed using a mean difference test. The results showed that the animated infographics created through these steps contributed positively to improvements in students’ attitudes toward environmental care. The contribution is evident in the average pre-test score of 70.38, which is lower than the post-test score of 85.92, indicating an increase in environmental care attitudes after the subjects watched the animated infographic. The developed media is expected to be an alternative to educate and campaign for environmental awareness, as well as a means of cooperation between institutions to save the environment.
