This article examines the issue of Jewish education in the Russian Empire during the long nineteenth century. An important aspect is the study of how such education functioned in cities beyond the Pale of Settlement. Education in the Heder was a formative experience for most Jewish intellectuals. Stereotypes and perceptions of Heders were shaped by these personal stories. Traditional Jewish education was not limited to Heders, but other levels were inaccessible to the minority. Unlike the neighbouring Austrian Empire, the Romanov state was for a long time unable to offer the Jewish population an alternative, primarily regarding elementary education. The situation began to change only in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the establishment of the education system. The early 1880s, a turning point in historiography, raises questions about the functioning of the educational system in cities beyond the Pale, particularly in the Kharkiv province. The problems of this period were also characteristic of previous decades. Jewish communities that needed to open Heders and invite Melameds faced bureaucratic delays, legal technicalities, and the reluctance of various government officials to take responsibility. Nevertheless, the demands of the Jewish population, whose numbers were constantly growing, often overcame these obstacles.
This article covers the experiences of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, most of whom were internally displaced scholars, in one of the projects documenting the Russian war in Ukraine. It reflects on this initiative from different professional and institutional perspectives and reveals the interrelation and mutual influence of researchers’ embodied experiences, the logic of team organization, and the methodological decisions undertaken. The case of our initiative shows the inherent tension between different temporalities within war documentation projects: interaction with the witness here-and-now and archiving for the future. It outlines the specifics of the institutional setting and how it shaped the war documentation project. The article also focuses on the role of the body and how it was reflected during psychological supervision, both from the point of view of group therapy for researchers and from the development of sensitivity in interaction with narrators.
Poeta pokazuje wagę, ale i ulotność ziemskiego życia, w chrześcijański sposób buduje swoją duszę i przygotowuje ją do przejścia do innego świata.
The aim of the study was to identify the features of genre diversity and artistic-imagery content in contemporary stage productions with a musical component. The research methodology included art and musicological analysis, as well as a structural-semantic approach. The content analysis method was used to identify the main thematic trends. The study of the thematic content of contemporary musical performances revealed several key trends. Firstly, a significant number of productions focused on the exploration of national identity, historical events, and cultural heritage – reflected in performances based on Ukrainian literary classics and folklore. Secondly, there was a noticeable interest in social issues, particularly themes of war, emigration, and the search for self in changing sociocultural conditions. The approaches combined traditional vocal-instrumental forms with innovative stage solutions – such as multimedia technologies, interactive audience engagement, and the fusion of live performance with electronic music. Particular attention was paid to scenography and choreographic design – both of which strongly influenced the overall dramaturgy of the productions. In the course of the study, it was demonstrated that contemporary musical performances played an important role in the development of Ukrainian theatre and musical art – contributing to the renewal of traditional forms, enrichment of the performance palette, and expansion of theatre’s influence on a wider audience. These performances became an effective means of communication between the artist and society, as well as a reflection of current cultural and social processes.
