Objectives: The current project compares the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal and needs identification interventions for working through lingering anger, bitterness, or resentment in response to interpersonal grievances. Method: Using an experimental, single therapy session design, 197 undergraduate participants (Study 1) completed a brief, self-guided online intervention involving either anger rumination (comparison condition), cognitive reappraisal, or the identification of unmet psychological needs. This design was replicated in a clinical sample of 31 adult participants (Study 2), who were recruited from local mental health clinics, utilizing in-person interventions. Outcomes consisted of changes in self-reported anger intensity, unfinished business, and unforgiveness. Results: Anger rumination produced little change in outcomes in the subclinical sample, whereas rumination exacerbated anger-related difficulties in the clinical sample. In both subclinical and clinical samples, cognitive reappraisal was associated with improvements in self-reported anger intensity, resolution, and unforgiveness. Needs identification was associated with reductions in unforgiveness in the subclinical sample but not in the clinical sample. Conclusions: The current project replicates and extends previous research by suggesting that cognitive reappraisal is more than just an emotion-regulation strategy-it is also a meaning-making strategy that reduces lingering feelings of anger toward intrapersonal resolution or forgiveness of interpersonal grievances. The expression of unmet psychological needs is a process of change that facilitates productive experiences of anger and should also be targeted by interventions across treatment approaches.
The 2022 multi-country mpox (formerly monkeypox) outbreak, driven by mpox virus (MPXV) Clade IIb poses renewed threat to global public health. The cessation of smallpox vaccination has created large immunologically naïve cohorts, with uncertain implications for contemporary MPXV susceptibility. To assess whether residual vaccination-derived immunity influences exposure risk, we combine serological and phylodynamic analyses. Using a six-plex Luminex assay, we measure immunoglobulin G (IgG) binding to six MPXV antigens in 176 Nigerian adults comprising of 75 healthcare workers sampled in 2021 and 101 community volunteers sampled in 2023. At baseline, 24/176 (13.6
The chemical shifts measured in solid-state 29Si NMR spectroscopy of pure silica zeolites are highly sensitive to the local geometry surrounding the corresponding silicon atoms and therefore hold promise for playing an important role in the structure determination of zeolite frameworks. Through an analysis of the large set of experimental 29Si NMR spectra of pure silica zeolites available in the Database of Zeolite Structures, including the recently added extra-large pore zeolite ZEO-5 which has several uniquely strained silicon geometries, a new structure-to-shift correlation equation was developed that allows for rapid and accurate calculations of isotropic 29Si chemical shifts from Si-O distances and Si-O-Si bond angles. This structure-to-shift relationship is supported by a comprehensive set of quantum chemical calculations of 29Si chemical shieldings performed on 200 different zeolite frameworks. With this ability to rapidly and accurately calculate 29Si chemical shifts, it was possible to carry out rapid structure refinements of zeolite frameworks in which small adjustments to the silicon and oxygen atomic coordinates were made until the differences between calculated and experimental chemical shifts were minimized. Chemical shift structure refinements for 51 zeolite frameworks were carried out and presented here. Based on the set of zeolites for which single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures are available, it is estimated that this chemical shift refinement strategy yields structures with silicon and oxygen atomic coordinates that differ by an average of only about 0.06 & Aring; compared to the single crystal structures.
We initiate a study of sign patterns that require or allow the non-symmetric strong multiplicity property (nSMP). We show that all cycle patterns require the nSMP, regardless of the number of nonzero diagonal entries. We present a class of Hessenberg patterns that require the nSMP. We characterize which star sign patterns require, which allow, and which do not allow the nSMP. We show that if a pattern requires distinct eigenvalues, then it requires the nSMP. Further, we characterize the patterns that allow the nSMP as being precisely the set of patterns that allow distinct eigenvalues, a property that corresponds to a simple feature of the associated digraph. We also characterize the sign patterns of order at most three according to whether they require, allow, or do not allow the nSMP.
We characterize the n & times; n nonzero patterns that require exactly n distinct eigenvalues. In fact, for each k with 1 <= k <= n, we characterize the n & times; n nonzero patterns that require exactly k distinct eigenvalues. We include some remarks comparing inverse eigenvalue problems for sign patterns to the corresponding questions for nonzero patterns. (c) 2026 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.
