Introduction: This study explored the conceptions of primary school teachers and special education teachers regarding co-teaching in the province of Concepción, Chile, identifying strengths and barriers to its implementation. Objective: To design improvement strategies that include teacher training processes, adjustments to institutional policies, and strengthening the conditions for effective co-teaching, thus promoting an education more aligned with the challenges of the Chilean education system. Materials and methods: A qualitative approach with thematic analysis was used. Ten teachers, with an average of ten years of experience, from municipal and subsidized private schools participated. Results: From semi-structured interviews, analyzed using QDA Miner Lite, three main categories emerged. The first reveals dual perceptions of co-teaching: as valuable professional support and as an organizational challenge. The second highlighted collaborative practices in the classroom, although hierarchical dynamics persist. The third pointed to limiting factors, such as lack of time for planning, unequal commitment, and rigid school cultures. The findings reveal a tension between the recognized pedagogical value of co-teaching and the structural obstacles that hinder its practice. Conclusions: Institutionalizing conditions for sustained collaboration is key.
