Stylistic competence is an important pragmatic competence, and adequate stylistic competence is required for large language model (LLM) to land in language life. In this paper, stylistic competence is defined as the ability to use appropriate style for communication in a specific register, and based on this, three tasks of stylistic classification, stylistic generation, and stylistic transformation are designed to evaluate the Chinese stylistic competence of LLMs represented by ChatGPT. It is found that LLMs have their own advantages and limitations in different tasks and styles. GPT-4 demonstrates the most comprehensive and excellent Chinese stylistic competence, ChatGPT3.5 and ERNIE Bot have better performance, ChatGLM-6B and SparkDesk have unstable performance and notable shortcomings, with their overall abilities being somewhat lackluster. In addition, the degree of informality of the texts generated by each model is relatively limited, the literary grace is ordinary, and problems such as consistency errors, normative errors, factual errors, illogicality, insufficient sentence fluency, and obvious traces of machine translation still exist. For LLM, it should be viewed from an instrumental perspective, expanding its stylistic competence with rich and diversified stylistic data resources and technological advances, and at the same time reasonably utilizing and giving full play to its stylistic resources attribute, to make it better serve the language life.
After the introduction of foreign terms, there may be multiple translation variants, one of which is caused by translation distortion, which is likely to cause confusion in the local concept system and cross-language academic communication. It is a language phenomenon that needs to be standardized urgently. Taking the linguistic term “ideophone” as a clue, this paper focuses on the causes and strategies of the translation distortion of foreign terms under the domesticating strategy. Translating terms relies on the shared concept elements between two languages. When the development of a concept in bilingual contexts becomes asymmetric, its translation has a high risk of distortion. This paper uses two knowledge graph tools to anchor in the concept system, and discusses the auxiliary intervention value of knowledge graph in terminology standardization and the construction of Chinese scientific and technological terminology system.
Current textbooks on Chinese culture for foreign learners shows that Chinese cultural education puts excessive emphasis on systematization and representativeness, but lacks consideration on learning demand and language ability. The effect of the “text and explanation”teaching mode is unsatisfactory, and it often leads to “pointless talk of culture”. This paper suggests using multi-media technology to upgrade this traditional teaching mode so as to improve the visualization and intelligibility of the cultural content. We believe that Chinese culture consists of cultures across China. Since culture relies on objects and events, cultural education can be conducted through visualization and story-telling. Both tangible and intangible culture can be taught via storytelling. When teaching Chinese culture to foreigners, instead of focusing on being comprehensive or general, educators may guide students to understand the macro level of Chinese culture through simple cases and stories. This paper thus promotes a new mode of teaching Chinese culture: citing local cases and telling sensational stories.
The transliteration model of foreign proper names into Chinese is shaped mainly by its typological characteristics of syllable-mightiness, differing from phoneme-mighty languages.Chinese character influences the transliteration, but syllable-mightiness weighs more in this scheme. The transliteration units of proper names are based on syllables which only consist of the existing ones in its phonological inventory. Those phonemes that cannot enter inventorial syllables will be combined with added phonemes to form inventorial syllables, or otherwise be deleted directly. These strategies of transliteration are also found in other syllable-mighty languages with various writing systems such as Japanese, Korean and Thai, indicating that there is no compulsory connection between writing systems and the syllable-based transliteration strategy. Syllable-mightiness and the nature of the Chinese character together contribute to the result that the same original proper name may have different forms of translation; and the same pronunciation of a translated name may be written in different characters. In this case, we argue that the“adding rather than omitting”strategy adopted by the mainstream media, such as Xinhua News Agency, is conducive to the fidelity and consistency of the translations of proper names.
The promulgation of Standard Glyph List of Generally Used Chinese Characters for Ancient Books Publishing is an important practice in the standardization of Chinese Characters in China, which fills the gap in and reflects the contemporary thinking on the glyph standardization of the traditional Chinese characters. The traditional Chinese characters still have important application value in today’s social and cultural life, but there are many problems in their practical application, which must be sorted out and solved. To standardize traditional Chinese characters, we not only respect the fact of character use in ancient books, but also take a contemporary perspective, and apply the principle of“optimization”and the concept of communication between ancient and modern times, as well as among different regions of China, so as to find the best meeting between theory and applicability.
