French rule was established in the Adriatic region of Boka Kotorska following the Peace of Tilsit in 1807. In this context, the French authorities perceived the close ties between the Orthodox clergy and the Montenegrin metropolitan as a potential political threat. This article examines the pressure exerted on the Orthodox clergy to sign oaths of allegiance to the French state in 1810, based on archival material from the State Archives in Dubrovnik. Rather than interpreting these measures in confessional terms, the paper argues that they should be understood within a broader political framework. The loyalty declarations, written in Serbian (Cyrillic script) with Italian translations, are analyzed as instruments of political control aimed at limiting pro-Montenegrin and pro-Russian influence. The article offers a reinterpretation of these documents, highlighting the interaction between religious structures and imperial governance in a contested borderland shaped by the competing interests of Austria, Russia, and France.
Drawing on recently declassified Vatican documents, this article reconstructs the extensive charitable work carried out by the Holy See on behalf of Eastern European refugees and displaced persons in the challenging post-war context of expanding communism, the nascent Cold War, and the evolving attitude of the major Western powers towards the Vatican’s actions, which were met with both support and mistrust. Aiming to transcend the victors’ justice and the logic of political and economic pragmatism, the Holy See launched an extensive charitable work, that was implemented through a series of new offices and missions. This article focuses on the Third Pontifical Mission, which operated in Germany and Austria, and on the hitherto unknown Migration Office, which acted as a liaison between national and international Catholic and secular activities concerning the resettlement of European refugees, in order to provide them with moral, religious and material assistance, and to secure them a future of peace and prosperity.
