This study presents a set of phraseological units derived from the Latin nouns cassis, laqueus, plaga, and rete. These terms are instruments for hunting and fishing which share the meaning "net" or "noose" and which can be employed in amatory contexts to portray the act of seduction of the desired or beloved other. A formal and semantic analysis of these units in their context will help elucidate whether they are collocations, locutions, or both. The corpus under analysis consists of Latin verse literature-elegiac, dramatic, and satirical poetry-from the republican and imperial periods (s. I a.d.). To compare the structure of these locutions in both languages, verse texts in Spanish (s. XIV-XVII) will also be examined.
The linguistic richness of a writer is manifested in the stylistic resources he uses to define the characters that intervene in his writings. The aim of this paper is to study the use of popular paremias (proverbs, proverbial phrases, dialogisms and proverbial phrases) in a contemporary literary text. For this purpose a methodology es applied, which takes into account the complex nature of these short and sententious statements. The literary text chosen is the comedy El faro [The lighthouse], by Rafael Negrete-Portillo, not only because of its contemporary relevance, being published in 2025, but also because it has received the Antonio Machado 2025 International Prize, awarded by the Antonio Machado Foundation in Collioure. The results obtained will make it possible to verify, on the one hand, the validity of the methodology applied and, on the other, whether the use of paremias has contributed to the creation of a feigned orality.
The aim of this article is to assess the passive phraseological competence of university students with an advanced level of language (Spanish and French), in relation to their paremiological competence. Therefore, the information obtained in this case study on phraseological competence has been contrasted with the information extracted from a previous study (Hu & eacute;scar and M. Sevilla, 2024) on paremiological competence developed with the same methodology. Through the results obtained from this study, the suggested objectives have been achieved, as well as validating the two proposed hypotheses, since it has been found that the phraseological competence of the participants is limited. However, the phraseological competence of the sample studied is higher than the paremiological competence of another similar sample in terms of age and language level analyzed in Hu & eacute;scar and M. Sevilla (2024).
Linguistic research requires comprehensive and representative resources to accurately reflect the phenomena under analysis. This study explores the synonyms and phraseological variants of the Spanish expression ganarse la vida (make a living). In a first phase, the synonymic content of ganarse la vida is examined through a selection of 17 dictionaries of various types, including synonym dictionaries, thesauri, and both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. In a second phase, after outlining the concept of phraseological variation, the phenomenon is illustrated using the Sketch Engine tool and the esTenTen18 corpus. The results point to a broad set of synonymous and variant expressions whose frequency and distribution support their inclusion in the development of linguistic and lexicographic resources.
This study analyses the identity of the 'dead body' that appears in chapter nineteen of the first part of Don Quixote: Saint Juan de la Cruz. After locating various documents in the historical archives of Valladolid, it proposes a hypothesis as to who is hiding behind the character of 'Alonso L & oacute;pez, a native of Alcobendas'. He relates this quixotic episode with the 'excommunication' suffered by Cervantes during the years he lived in Andalusia, analyses the anti-clerical satire present in the episode and the origin of the nickname 'Caballero de la Triste Figura' (Knight of the Sad Figure).
The literature of French Polynesia has a strong political role to play through the writings of its authors. Their relationship with France is the result of a long period of colonisation and domination that has left a strong mark on their society. Consequently, some of the most important historical events in this region related to French domination and its consequences, such as the establishment of the Pacific Nuclear Experimentation Centre (CEP), are reflected in the literary works of influential authors such as Chantal Spitz, Titaua Peu and Ariirau. In the present case, we will focus on several of the works of these three authors in order to analyse, on the one hand, the role played in our corpus by the CEP and the consequences of its establishment and, on the other hand, we will detail the way in which the three writers approach the political debate surrounding the independence or autonomy of French Polynesia.
This study examines the graphic representation of relief interjections in comics in Spanish and French, focusing on their phonetic-phonological structure and crosslinguistic variation. Based on an ad hoc corpus of 72 comics, the study analyzes the forms of primary and secondary interjections, identifying recurring patterns in each language. The results indicate that primary interjections exhibit a prototypical phonetic configuration, with vowel sounds such as /a/, /ju/, and /u/, and consonantal sounds such as /f/ and [h]. Secondary interjections reflect grammaticalized constructions related to religious expressions and gratitude. Additionally, a preference for descriptive sound effects over onomatopoeic representations for sighs is observed. These findings underscore the importance of comics as a multimodal medium for studying emotional expression and linguistic variation in interjections.
During the difficult years of the civil war between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians, Christine de Pisan wrote her Epistre a la royne (The Epistle to the Queen) with the aim of promoting, at least in theory, the mediation of Queen Elizabeth of Bavaria in the conflict. Following a model she would also use in other works such as Cit & eacute; des Dames (The City of Ladies), the author incorporates models of sovereign women who, in the biblical, Greco-Roman, or French past, faced conflicts in which their husbands or sons were involved, either through their own fault or due to the hostility of others. In all cases, the women's judicious attitude saved the day, although certain female anti-models are also described whose behavior led to disaster. The author presents all of them as a guide to the attitude that Elizabeth of Bavaria should adopt as regent of France.
This study examines somatisms in the Libro de Alexandre as phraseological units that convey military action, within a framework in which corporeality articulates not only gesture but also the symbolic and ritual dimensions of epic discourse. Through a defined corpus, the analysis identifies idiomatic patterns that demonstrate how certain locutional combinations-alzar las manos ("to raise the hands"), alzar los ojos ("to raise the eyes"), tornar cabeza ("to turn the head"), tornar espaldas/cuestas ("to turn the back/shoulders")- encode culturally marked images of supplication or retreat. Although these pairs share syntactic structures, they differ significantly in terms of fixation and frequency. Alzar las manos exhibits a higher degree of physical ritualization, whereas alzar los ojos conveys a more introspective dimension. Similarly, while tornar cabeza and tornar espaldas become fully lexicalized phraseologisms, tornar cuestas gradually falls into disuse, offering insights into the structural and semantic limits of phraseological fixation in medieval Spanish.
Jhumpa Lahiri's literary trajectory has taken an unusual turn: from her beginnings as a writer in the English language to her adoption of Italian as the primary language for her literary work. This article explores several aspects of this linguistic shift, presenting the main external facts surrounding it and offering an analysis of both the outcomes of this change and the dynamics involved in the self-translation of her Italian works into English. The analysis also considers Lahiri's own academic reflections on the transformations in her creative process and seeks to highlight their existential significance using linguistic, mythical, and thematic resources.
This paper aims to analyze the intensifying consecutive construction [ESTAR que Xclause], based on data from the esTenTen18 corpus (Sketch Engine). The construction, which licenses expressions such as Estoy que me derrito ("I'm melting"), Est & aacute; que muerde ("He's about to snap"), or Est & aacute;n que se comen las u & ntilde;as ("They're biting their nails with anxiety"), conveys the meaning of experiencing an emotion, state, or sensation to an extreme degree and displays all the features of a constructional idiom from the perspective of Construction Grammar. The article will begin by examining the semantic profile of the predicates in the X clause with an animate subject, based on the hypothesis that these predicates typically constitute metaphorical and metonymic expressions with varying degrees of lexicalization. This analysis is innovative in that it includes creative, non-lexicalized instances.
