Tourists commonly use metro systems for intradestination travel, as metros form the core of public transport networks in large cities. Evaluating public transport services from the perspective of tourists helps address the limitations of previous research, which has focused primarily on residents or commuters. This study examines the impact of metro systems on tourists' use of public transport for intradestination mobility by analysing changes in metro networks across different stages of development, with a particular focus on travel mode, accessibility, and equity. First, the conventional concept of travel cost is extended to incorporate travel time, fare, and the number of transfers as generalised travel cost. Tourist journeys from “hotels” to “attractions” are constructed to analyse changes in travel mode across three scenarios: no metro system, the existing metro network, and a future metro network. The effects of metro systems on public transport accessibility are revealed through calculations of travel time, fare, and transfer time. Second, the Dagum Gini coefficient is employed to evaluate the impact of metro construction on the equity of public transport for tourists from both horizontal and vertical perspectives. Empirical findings indicate that metro development exacerbates group and spatial inequalities in travel costs for tourists, an inevitable phenomenon that arises during the development of the metro system. Finally, suggestions are proposed to enhance the integration of tourism and transport, such as promoting multimodal transport, encouraging the use of ride-hailing services and “Park and Ride” schemes as supplements to public transport, and developing integrated attraction transit passes to improve equity.
Tourism commercialization in historic towns has attracted substantial attention. However, research has long been constrained by a degree-centered perspective, leading to inconsistent and sometimes contradictory conclusions. To address these limitations, this study develops a quality-oriented analytical framework of tourism commercialization. Qualitative analysis indicates that organic commercialization is constituted by four dimensions: embedded commercialization, innovative commercialization, heterogeneous commercialization, and orderly commercialization. On this basis, this study constructs a theoretical framework of organic commercialization. This study advances the concept of organic commercialization as a representation of high-quality tourism commercialization and offers theoretical insights into the complex dynamics of tourism commercialization and valuable managerial implications for sustainable development in historic towns.
Unethical tourism operators continuously disrupt the order of the tourism market. Based on the parasitic relationship within symbiosis theory, this study offers novel insights into unethical tourism practices. Qualitative analysis reveals that the emergence of unethical tourism operators is driven by the complexity of the tourism industry, structural exploitation of the tourism market, excess benefit drive, and low immunity of tourists. These operators persistently disrupt tourism market through four mechanisms: parasitism, collusion, assimilation, and evolution. This research extends prior studies by moving beyond individual morality and regulatory shortcomings, revealing structural roots and filling a gap in symbiosis theory on parasitism mechanisms. This study also provides significant implications for tourism market governance.
This article applies a Critical Tourism Studies (CTS) lens to examine the socio-cultural sustainability of gastronomy tourism from the perspective of multiple stakeholders. Drawing on a case study of loquat tourism in Dongshan, China, we demonstrate that gastronomy tourism can serve as a promising arena for fostering socio-cultural sustainability; this potential is mediated by the interplay of intrapersonal knowledge, interpersonal linkages, and structural conditions, however. For farmers, loquat tourism reinforces personal identity, yet access to this opportunity remains uneven, as narrow social networks and a lack of essential tourism knowledge present a barrier to their participation. Tourism entrepreneurs, tour organisers, and visitors perceive loquat tourism as supporting food heritage preservation, whereas food consultants and government officials regard such efforts as largely smallholder-based and undermined by an ageing farming population and declining involvement among young people and non-local professionals. These findings advance debates on the socio-cultural sustainability of gastronomy tourism and suggest new directions for critical inquiry.
This article reveals the nature of the 'traditional costume experience fever' of wearing Hanfu to travel. Study 1 revealed the complex motivations of tourists to wear Hanfu to travel by conducting semi-structured interviews with 21 hanfu tourists. One category is autonomous motivations, which include love traditional culture, ethnic community consciousness, national community consciousness, aesthetics and social interaction. The other category is controlling motivations, which include scene consistency, Hanfu marketing, destination experience marketing, secular pressure and functional constraints. Study 2 reveals the complex mechanism between hanfu tourists' motivation and loyalty through two questionnaire studies. A necessity condition analysis showed that scene consistency was a necessary condition for loyalty among Hanfu tourists. Qualitative comparative analysis showed that the loyalty of Hanfu tourists was generated by the synergistic effect of multiple motivations. Four equivalent motivational configurations exist: traditional cultural favoritism, supremacy of the national community, consumerist aesthetics, and aesthetic tolerance. These findings are of considerable significance for the sustainable development of the emerging traditional attire experiential tourism industry. As urbanization rapidly progresses, rural areas are being increasingly recognized as havens for individuals seeking a slower pace of life. Despite the growing interest in slow tourism as a travel modality, there is a lack of rural destinations that have successfully established slow tourism as their primary image. This research focuses on Gaochun International Cittàslow in China, including a mixed-method approach to investigate how rural areas can cultivate a slow tourism image to attract visitors. This paper introduces a new conceptual framework for rural China's slow tourism image, termed the bullseye framework. This framework divides the image of slow tourism into three concentric layers: experiential foundation, interactive framework, and value resonance. Compositional analysis reveals a certain mismatch between the promotion of the image of slow tourism by the government and tourism companies and the perception of tourists. This mismatch is particularly evident in promoting an eco-original lifestyle, preserving folk culture, and creating a slow-paced living atmosphere. Therefore, the government and tourism companies must more accurately understand the needs of tourists to formulate more effective promotion strategies.
Increasing social stress threatens people's mental health. Travelling can effectively relieve mental stress, so the role of tourism experiences in mental restoration is gaining increasing attention. However, no research has examined the mechanism of the embodied effect of tourism experiences on tourists' mental restoration from a multisensory perspective. Based on sensory marketing theory, a model of multisensory tourism experiences and mental restoration is established, and the boundary conditions and configuration of the former on the latter are considered. Two complementary studies are conducted in the context of historical and cultural districts using structural equation modelling (SEM) and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). The following conclusions are drawn. First, tourists' multisensory tourism experience in historical and cultural blocks indirectly improves their mental restoration through the two intermediary psychological processing functions of place attachment and a perceived restorative environment. Second, tourist involvement plays a positive moderating role between multisensory tourism experiences and both place attachment and a perceived restorative environment. Finally, there are no necessary sensory and psychological conditions for high mental restoration, but there are four types of multisensory tourism experience configurations, all of which enable tourists to obtain mental restoration in historical and cultural blocks.
Gastronomic identity is an emerging concept with considerable explanatory power in understanding cultural and social dynamics. This study investigates the meaning of gastronomic identity and the cultural and social processes involved in its touristic commodification. The study was conducted in Suzhou, China, using a multimethod qualitative approach comprising participant observation, secondary document analysis, and semistructured interviews. Analysis reveals that the essence of Suzhou's gastronomic identity lies in seasonality, periodic changes in local food supply and demand. The commodification of this seasonal feature has transformed into a cultural allure for visitors. Stakeholders strategically leverage seasonal selections and culinary presentations to authenticate the regional gastronomic identity. However, these efforts are undermined by unethical food business practices-disregarding seasonality and engaging in premature food production-that threaten seasonal food culture's authenticity. This study enhances our understanding of the place-based meaning of gastronomic identity and its commodification and authentication in tourism.

Attitudinal interventions are commonly implemented to nudge pro-environmental actions. However, the relative roles and sequences of cognitive and affective attitudes on tourists’ pro-environmental behavioral intention (PEBI) and how PEBI variants impact the attitude-intention relationships require further investigation. Based on the theory of planned behavior, this paper compares the differential effects and sequences of cognitive and affective attitudes on tourists’ low-effort and high-effort PEBI. Structural equation modeling results of two studies conducted in a nature-based and an urban destination showed a superior role of affect, i.e., affective, but not cognitive attitude, guided tourists’ PEBI, irrespective of implementation difficulty variants. This finding supports the automatic-processing rather than the controlled-processing hypothesis of attitude-intention processes in the tourism context. The results of sequential models further confirmed the above conclusion and supported the “affective” model wherein affective attitude predicts cognitive attitude when shaping subsequent PEBI. These studies advance understandings of relationships between and sequences of attitudes and PEBIs and challenge predominant cognitive interventions in environmental communication practices.
