Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in Portugal and one of the most important causes of morbidity and incapacity in Portugal. Since 2016, through the project "Coimbra United by the Heart" (CUH) municipalities scaled-up efforts on cardiovascular disease prevention, creating a community health network that: 1) early identifies citizens with cardiovascular risk; 2) provide awareness-raising strategies for a healthy lifestyle; 3) improve the health surveillance of people with cardiovascular risk; 4) qualify demand for primary health care for health surveillance. In Coimbra, Hospital (Heart and vesel CHUC department), Community Care Units, Nursing and Health School and Coimbra City Hall mobilize various thematic posts throughout the city (healthy lifestyles, healthy eating, smoking cessation, alcohol consumption, sleep disorder, stress management and physical activity), where citizens can know his cardiovascular risk and raise awareness about CVD prevention. Three months after, impact evaluation and citizens’ PHC surveillance is evaluated. Until 2023, the SCORE (risk of death from cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years) was evaluated in 2745 citizens with an average age of 53.4 ± 17.8 years, of which 55% had low CVR, 19% moderate RCV, 18% high RCV and 8% very high RCV. 1 in 2 citizens of Coimbra has high cholesterol, has Blood Pressure values higher than recommended, and has at least a high risk of developing metabolic diseases. The data obtained was sent to the respective general practitioners and all citizens who did not have health monitoring within a period of time defined by their cardiovascular risk were summoned by their family health team. Through telephone interviews 3 months after each intervention, between 1 (not useful) and 10 (very useful), the project was classified with 8.8 ± 1.3 points regarding its usefulness and that it should continue. The “Coimbra united by the heart” project proved to be effective in identifying and referring citizens who needed health surveillance and capable of stimulating the demand for Primary Health Care as a way of promoting health. Based on the experience gained, it is perceived by all those involved that it must be continued and improved in the coming years. Through partnerships with numerous leading institutions in the Coimbra community, “Coimbra united by the Heart” becomes an efficient network of community partnerships for the well-being of citizens. Through the constant project monitoring, it was possible to underlie and plan new areas of intervention such as better articulation between differentiated health care and PHC, improvement of established indicators for cardiovascular disease prevention and specialized training in primary health care.
Universities have been the focus of numerous studies on health promotion initiatives, mainly centred on results that determine outcomes and impacts. This study explores the perceptions of various community members regarding implementing the university health promotion policy. We employed qualitative methods (case study); semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted at a Chilean university to gather data based on both inductive and deductive analyses. A comprehensive schema of students', professors' and administrative/technical staff's perceptions was established. We found a generally positive assessment of the policy and its promotion of healthy lifestyle environments. However, participation within the university community was uneven, with each group identifying different barriers to increased involvement: high academic workloads (students), research and administrative responsibilities (professors), and limited availability of health and wellness-promoting activities (administrative/technical staff). The findings suggest that future educational health initiatives should incorporate health indicators into management practices, enhance wellness literacy and empower community members to foster greater engagement. From a methodology perspective, study design enables the replication of health policy or program deployment in educational community health settings.
Adherence to hand hygiene procedures is crucial for all populations, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented specific guidelines for infection control. Frequent and correct hand hygiene can prevent infections, but non-compliance with hand hygiene is pervasive. Nursing students address this issue from the beginning of their training. In nursing training, self-efficacy is crucial in enhancing students’ competence, motivation, and clinical performance. We performed a cross-sectional multicenter study in five European countries, with a cross-sectional design with an online application of an instrument measuring hand hygiene knowledge based on WHO guidelines and general self-efficacy and specific self-efficacy for infection control. A total of 638 first-year nursing students participated in this study. The mean percentage of correct answers was 67.9%, with a considerable difference depending on the items. The worst results were obtained for questions related to sources of infection and types of hand hygiene methods in different situations. Finnish students displayed significantly (p < 0.001) higher scores in HH knowledge, whereas Estonian students had significantly (p < 0.001) higher levels of self-efficacy. There were significant correlations between the hand hygiene knowledge score and the self-efficacy score (p < 0.001). A multivariate analysis by linear regression analysis showed significant associations between the hand hygiene knowledge survey score and the students’ age (p < 0.001, OR = 0.18, 95% CI 0.04–0.10), as well as their country of origin (p = 0.01, OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.03–0.34). HH knowledge is quite low among nursing students, and is correlated with self-efficacy, although the strongest predictors are age and country of origin. Different nursing curricula must favor HH knowledge, with varying degrees of emphasis depending on the country.
Objective: Compare Cardiovascular Risk between workers in Brazil and Portugal who work in the teaching context and its relationship with Lifestyle and Common Mental Disorder. Methods: Cross-sectional study that compared the cardiovascular health conditions of teaching workers in Manaus (Brazil) and Coimbra (Portugal). The odds ratio between groups was estimated. Results: The differences were: Smoking and hypercholesterolemia in participants from Portugal. Hypertension, chronic disease, increased abdominal perimeter, common mental disorder, and absence from work in Brazil. The variables with the greatest effect for high cardiovascular risk were: Country-Portugal [17.273 (95%CI1.538-193.951)], sex-male [61.577 (95%CI5.398-702.469)] and smoking [593.398 (95%CI57.330-6.142.020)]. Conclusion: The differences in risk between groups showed that participants from Portugal, men, with high blood pressure and/or smokers are the most vulnerable to having a cardiovascular event. There is a need for interventions to promote cardiovascular health in the workplace in both countries.

Hipertensão, doença crônica, perímetro abdominal aumentado, transtorno mental comum e afastamento do trabalho no Brasil.
The National School Health Program in Portugal advocates for healthy lifestyles. However, school health teams mostly focus their activities on educating children, whereas it is the families who are primarily responsible for managing children’s lifestyles. Although the programme proposes interactive health education activities, such as meetings with the children’s families, few parents participate in these activities. The project Gostar de Mim was created to bridge this gap by promoting healthy family lifestyles in school settings. The project used an evaluating instrument called the ‘Parents’ Booklet’ packed with information. This study assessed the usefulness of the booklet in providing health information and planning family engagement. Based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED framework (PRECEDE: Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Educational/Environmental Diagnosis and Evaluation; PROCEED: Policy, Regulatory, and Organizational Constructs in Educational and Environmental Development), this article focuses on the social and epidemiological assessment phases. We examined the health surveillance status of children aged 6–10 years (epidemiological phase) and description of health behaviours in different lifestyle dimensions (behavioural and environmental phase). The Parents’ Booklet was used to identify parents' perspectives on their children's lifestyles. Data analysis of 568 Parents’ Booklet (23 schools) use cases showed that the lifestyle priorities, in order, were ‘sleep and rest’ (95.6%), ‘energy balance’ (100%), ‘oral/body healthcare’ (95.6%), ‘alcohol, tobacco/other drugs’ (73.9%), ‘consumerism’ (91.3%), ‘leisure-time occupation’ (91.3%), and ‘literacy and satisfaction at school’ (86.9%). Clearly, the Parents’ Booklet was useful, as it made it possible to obtain information that allowed for participatory school health diagnosis and can guide community nursing actions that need to be developed in schools. Crucially, this tool can be useful for parents, enabling them to be more aware of their children's lifestyle via self-monitoring as well as increasing their participation in health education.
The northern region of Portugal has the largest number of companies manufacturing granite and stone products, which has become the region’s trademark. In the municipalities of Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel, the economic activity of this area is important. However, the lack of attractiveness of this activity, combined with the high prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis in this population, has led to a growing shortage of labor. In order for this project to be the result of collaborative, integral work centered on the people who are the target of health promotion, we used the Participatory Health Research (PHR) approach, based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, to implement a mixed-methods study, including participant observation, interviews and document analysis. These data were used to co-create a study design. In 2021, a total of 102 interviews were carried out and self-completion surveys were distributed: the Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire (FLQ) and the EQ-5D-3L. Within the scope of occupational health nursing and in the field of action of public health nurses, with the interviews and self-completed surveys carried out, we identified potential focuses for occupational health nursing intervention to promote the health of stone industry workers: adherence to protective measures, energy balance deficit, tobacco and alcohol consumption and access to health services. Data analysis made it possible to assess the prevalence of risk behaviors by order and to involve managers and workers in the co-creation of a health promotion program. The accurate identification of the focuses for nursing intervention not only improves the effectiveness of occupational health services, allowing for targeted interventions adapted to workers’ needs, but also contributes considerably to health promotion in the workplace, resulting in safer working environments, a reduction in occupational diseases and, consequently, a healthier and more productive workforce. This protocol of this study was not registered.
The strong affinity between the Spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor is postulated as one of the main reasons for the high viral transmission rate, leading the WHO to declare COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and to adopt measures to contain viral spread. Moreover, due to the virus’s pathophysiological mechanism, non-specific symptoms, atypical progression, especially in the elderly and immunocompromised, and a faster and more lethal progression are observed. Additionally, as knowledge about the natural history of the virus infection has advanced, persistent symptoms and/or sequelae causing organic dysfunctions and negatively impacting patients’ quality of life have been noted. In light of this, the objective of this article was to present an integrative review of the main sequels of COVID-19 in the years 2021 and 2022. To achieve this, full articles were searched in the Scientific Electronic Library Online, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, and PubMed research databases, in both Portuguese and English languages, using the PRISMA methodology (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), resulting in the selection of 14 articles. Among the results, the following stand out: the pathogenesis of persistent COVID-19 is based on the theory of immune phenomena secondary to infection, abnormal immune response, and the presence of the virus in immunologically privileged sites; prevalent complications include fatigue, dyspnea, subjective cognitive impairment, neurological sequelae, central nervous system inflammatory diseases, and post-viral olfactory dysfunction; evidence of a causal relationship between COVID-19 and subacute thyroiditis was presented; a higher number of complications and hospitalizations were demonstrated in vitamin D-deficient patients; as well as the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in the healthcare professional population. In conclusion, a scarcity of studies directly addressing COVID-19 sequelae was noted, highlighting the need for further research to create more specific diagnostic protocols.
Metodologia: Revisão de escopo seguindo a metodologia do Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) e orientado pelo Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).
Objective: To map the formation processes and ongoing education actions experienced by Community Health Agents (CHAs) in the context of family health, anchored in the concept of culture. Methodology: Scope review following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The search in databases such as BVS, EBSCO – Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, GreenFILE, SocINDEX, Embase, ERIC, Global Index Medicus, PUBMED, Scielo, Scopus, WOS, took place in November and December 2022. The search terms were: Community Health Workers, Professional Training, Continuing Education, Family Health Strategy, Primary Health Care. Studies analyzing training experiences and actions of Permanent Education in Health (PEH) for CHAs in the context of family health were included. Endnote and Rayyan software were used in managing the selection of findings. The review protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF). Results: The sample included 25 studies, generating two categories: The primacy of instrumental technical training culture; and The biomedical culture guiding PEH. CHA training involves disinvestment and invisibility, focusing on the biomedical model. On the other hand, even if sporadic, PEH actions are guided by emerging health themes. Final Considerations: The formative processes and PEH for CHAs involve paths of construction and deconstruction, progress, and setbacks, based on a culture that often restricts established rights.
