■ ABSTRACT: This article aims to study the use of verb tenses in written narratives produced by Spanish heritage speakers (SHS) children, growing up in a multilingual context. We analyze the distribution and level of adequacy of verb tenses, focusing on two problematic aspects for heritage speakers: the contrast “perfective/ imperfective” and the use of the subjunctive. Moreover, we compare the heritage speakers’ texts with narratives produced by children growing up in a Spanish monolingual context. Participants were 165 children (8.6 -13.7 years old): 118 SHS children and 47 children growing up in a Spanish-speaking context. Results showed a similar distribution of verb tenses and level of adequacy in both groups. However, the SHS group presented some particular uses of past tenses and seemed to be less accurate in the aspectual opposition and in the use of subjunctive mode.
Switzerland is a country with a multilingual tradition with different linguistic communities. Its multilingual character is evident through the fact that four official languages are spoken, albeit with different levels of prestige and quantity of speakers: German, French, Italian and Romansh. In Switzerland, the equivalent of the term "heritage language" varies between the linguistic and geographical regions. In Switzerland, Spanish is also spoken by first- and second-generation immigrants. Spanish is currently the second most popular foreign language in the Swiss education system after English. In Switzerland, there are two types of Spanish Language and Culture of Origin (LCO) courses that can generally be referred to as "Spanish" or "Spanish/Latin American". Changes in the population and immigration policies have also produced a change in the LCO courses. The main goal of the LCO courses remains the promotion of the language of origin—including literacy skills—and knowledge of the culture of origin.
This article aims to study narrative complexity in written texts produced by Spanish heritage speakers growing up in two linguistic regions of Switzerland. Texts produced in their heritage language by children living either in French- or German-speaking parts of Switzerland were analyzed and compared to texts written by Spanish speaking children growing up in a mostly monolingual context in Argentina. According to the literature, it was expected that children’s heritage language command and literacy abilities would mask their narrative competence in Spanish (i.e., that heritage speakers would show lower narrative complexity than their monolingual peers). The participants were 138 pupils aged between 9 and 12;5 (twelve years and five months), distributed in three groups: Spanish heritage language speakers living in German-speaking Switzerland (n=66), Spanish heritage language speakers living in French-speaking Switzerland (n=25), and a comparison Group made up of Spanish speakers growing up in a monolingual context (n=47). Heritage speakers’ parents also completed a questionnaire describing the children’s linguistic background. We did not find significant differences between groups in terms of story grammar components, suggesting that command of language and writing constraints do not affect narrative complexity development in heritage language speakers.
The present study focuses on the analysis of syntactic complexity (SC) in written narratives produced by Spanish heritage language speakers, growing up in a multilingual context. In order to describe the level of syntactic complexity of a text, we considered traditional measures of SC (T-Units, mean length of T-Unit, syntactic complexity index, and percentage of error free clauses). Also, we assessed the type and frequency of subordinate clauses used in the children's written productions. Besides, we explored possible associations between syntactic complexity and different variables (such as age, Spanish input at home and time attending Spanish courses). Finally, we compared the SC performance of the heritage speakers (HS) with that of full Spanish speakers. Results showed that the groups do not differ greatly in the SC of their text productions. Findings are discussed considering the exposure to Spanish and the cognitive demands of writing.
This contribution explores the transformation of the teaching practices of 10 in- service kindergarten teachers who participated in a teaching education (T.E) course in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The study is based on the assumption that representations underlie teaching practices and that T.E affects these representations (Scheuer & Pozo, 2006). Hence, a T.E course was designed and implemented to answer the following research question: how do teaching practices and teaching discourses change after teacher education? The T.E. course focused on the practices of personal narrative telling in kindergarten. It concerned the viewing and analyzing of videos of each participant´s classes. The analysis showed transformations in the 10 teachers´ practices, in relation with two dimensions: instrumental and social. The analysis of one of the teacher´s discourse and practice allowed to infer and categorize transformations in the teacher´s representations and mental models.
This paper aims to explore the incidence of didactic strategies on the usage of anaphoric resources, in written expository texts, produced by Spanish speaking children, from Cordoba, Argentina. In order to identify and analyze the anaphoric resources used by children, we designed and implemented a sequence of didactic activities, based on gender textual characteristics. The genre to teach was the "encyclopedia entry". We analyzed the children production obstacles and difficulties and compared the productions before and after the didactic intervention, in order to assess the impact of teaching in the development of the cohesion devices. Eighty Spanish speaking children, of 3rd grade who attended two schools from Cordoba, Argentina, participated in this study. The results showed consistent changes after the didactic intervention that mainly consisted in an increase of the diversity of resources and the adequacy score in final productions; a higher presence of lexical resources, a higher precision and a decrease of ambiguous ellipsis.

The study examines, as well, the impact of the sequence in the children's performance. The elaboration of the instrument and the analyses of the productions were based on the principles of the Socio-discursive Interactionism (Bronckart, 2004). The results showed that the children improved their argumentative skills and progressed in their comprehension of the communicative situation, the planification process and the formal conventions of the letter. The pedagogical implications are discussed.
This paper aims to study the writing skills in texts, in Spanish, produced by students at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The paper analyzes the student's linguistic trajectory and observes their difficulties and skills in the production of argumentative texts. We also consider the possible relationship of the language biography with the written production. Forty seven students took part in this work. They attend the first course of Spanish Translation and Spanish Literature, at the University of Geneva. The students were asked to answer a questionnaire about their linguistic trajectory. They were also asked to write a linguistic biography and an argumentative essay. Difficulties associated with planning and textualization were observed in the written productions. The results showed also a correlation between written performance and some variables considered in the questionnaire.
