This article analyzes the racial question in Brazil from an interdisciplinary perspective (historical, pedagogical, social, and legal), focusing on affirmative action policies in higher education and the role of the Judiciary in their consolidation. It begins by deconstructing the myth of racial democracy and denouncing the genocide of the Black population—in its physical, political, social, and symbolic dimensions—to conceptualize racism as a structural and institutional phenomenon. In this context, it examines the transition from Law No. 12,711/2012 to the updates introduced by Law No. 14,723/2023, highlighting innovations such as the inclusion of quilombola students, changes in competition logic, priority in student financial aid, and the expansion of the quota system to graduate studies. The study warns that although the enrollment of vulnerable groups has expanded, critical retention challenges and high dropout rates persist due to institutional barriers. Finally, it highlights the decisive role of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in guaranteeing the constitutionality of quotas and validating hetero-identification panels, concluding that combating structural racism requires ongoing coordination between racial literacy in pedagogical practices, the consolidation of public retention policies, and firm enforcement by the justice system.
Objective: To synthesise current evidence on the recognition of signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia and to examine how this recognition supports safe nursing care in primary health care. Methods: A narrative review with a structured literature search was undertaken. PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO and relevant peer-reviewed journal platforms were searched for publications from 2020 to 2025 using combinations of terms related to pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, nursing, primary health care, antenatal care, signs, symptoms, knowledge and education. Peer-reviewed clinical guidelines, reviews, observational studies and educational interventions directly relevant to the review question were prioritised. Results: Pre-eclampsia is a multisystem disorder diagnosed after 20 weeks of gestation by new-onset hypertension with proteinuria and/or maternal organ or uteroplacental dysfunction. Symptoms such as persistent severe headache, visual disturbance, epigastric or right upper quadrant pain and dyspnoea warrant urgent assessment, while oedema and rapid weight gain are nonspecific. Evidence indicates that nurses are central to accurate blood-pressure assessment, risk identification, symptom enquiry, health education, continuity of antenatal care and timely escalation or referral. Studies also identify clinically important gaps in nurses' knowledge and show that structured education can improve professional knowledge and pregnant women's awareness. Conclusion: Early recognition of pre-eclampsia depends on systematic clinical assessment rather than symptoms alone. In primary health care, nursing practice should combine accurate surveillance, evidence-based education, risk-directed prevention and prompt referral when warning features are identified. Educational materials may support this work, but their content and effectiveness require formal validation before they are treated as validated interventions.
Introduction: Chronic pulmonary diseases (CPD), such as COPD, bronchiectasis, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), affect the airways and present with exacerbation episodes that compromise patients' quality of life. Objectives: To analyze the main causes of exacerbations in patients with CPD treated at the Medical Specialties Center of CESUPA (CEMEC). Methodology: A cross-sectional, descriptive, and retrospective study based on the analysis of medical records from the pulmonology service at CEMEC. Results: A total of 84 eligible medical records were evaluated. There was a predominance of males (56%), patients aged between 60 and 87 years (75%), and those with a smoking history (66.7%). The most frequent CPDs were COPD (44.5%), bronchiectasis (34.7%), and IPF (20.8%). Bacterial infections stood out as the main cause of exacerbation and hospital admissions. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant association between exacerbation and the specific underlying disease. Bacterial exacerbations were the most prevalent and were the main determining factor for the higher number of hospitalizations, reinforcing the importance of regular clinical follow-up and prevention.
