The antioxidant activity of the dry extract from the complex plant remedy has been studied in model systems in vitro. The complex plant remedy includes the following species of medicinal plants: Serratula centauroides (L.), Bergenia crassifolia (L.) Fritsch, Rosa davurica Pall., inula helenium L., Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench. It has been established that the plant remedy under study inhibits the oxidation of the biological substrate preventing from the destruction of beta -carotene (IC50=24.3 mu g/ml)and yolk lipoproteids (IC50=65.8 mu g/ml) and having membrane stabilizing effect in peroxide (IC50=0.97 mu g/ml) and osmotic hemolysis (IC50 =0.11 mu g/ml) of erythrocytes. The complex remedy manifests the radical binding activity for 2,2-dipheny1-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH') (IC50 =61.4 mu g/ml), superoxide anion-radical (IC50 =28.6 mu g/ml), nitrogen oxide (IC50 =55.3 mu g/ml), also for Fe2+ (IC50 =639.3 mu g/ml). The marked antioxidant activity of the tested remedy is due to the complex of biologically active substances (flavonoids, tannins, polyphenolic compounds, phenol carbonic acids, ecdysteroids, etc.) contained in its components.
During experiments on white rats of the Wistar line, anti-inflammatory activity of the extract of dry complex herbal remedy (Juglans regia L. Rich ex Kimth., Corylus avellana L., Agrimonia eupatoria L., Bidens tripartita L., Xanthium strumarium L., Urtica dioica L. Lemna minor L., Cichorium intybus L., Onopordum acanthium L.) was examined on models of acute exudative (carrageenan and formalin), chronic alterative and proliferative inflammation. It is found that phytoextract in doses of 100-300 mg/kg has antiexudative activity, reducing the exudation caused by phlogogenic agents. The tested extract has an anti-alterative effect, limiting the alteration of tissues with acetic acid and enhancing regenerative processes.
Background. Intensive physical exertion is one of the stress-factors leading to the decrease of non-specific resistance of the body, significant increase in oxygen consumption followed by activation of the lipid peroxidation and decrease of endogenic antioxidant system efficacy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the complex plant remedy on exercise tolerance of laboratory animals and to reveal mechanisms increasing physical endurance. Materials and methods. The experiments were carried out on white Wistar rats weighing 190-220 g. The physical endurance of the animals was estimated by recording time of weighted swimming to complete exhaustion in the pool. The weighting was 7 % of the body mass. The water solution of the dry extract derived from five medicinal plants was introduced intragastrically to the animals of the experimental group at the dose of 100 mg/kg in the volume of 10 ml/kg for 7 days (once a day), an hour before testing. The content of ATP, lactic acid and pyruvic acid were determined in the skeletal muscle homogenate; glycogen was determined in the liver homogenate; in the blood serum there was estimated concentration of malonic dialdehyde, the activity of catalase; the concentration of reduced glutathione was determined in the whole blood and the activity of superoxide dismutase was estimated in erythrocytes. Conclusion. The course introduction of the complex plant remedy to rats results in resilience to intensive physical exertion due to optimization of energy metabolism, inhibition of free-radical biomacromolecule oxidation processes and increase in endogenic antioxidant system activity.

As the result it was found that dry extract of Paeonia anomala L. had evident anticonvulsant effect.
Aim. To assess the effect of dry extract of Gentiana algida in experimental bronchopneumonia of combined etiology. Methods. The experiments were conducted on 32 white Wistar rats (body weight of 180-200 g). The animals were divided in 4 groups, 8 animals each. Bronchopneumonia was caused by dichlorvos inhalations followed by pharyngeal contamination by Staphylococcus aureus (1 bln/ml). Dry extract of Gentiana algida was given intragastrically at a dose of 200 mg/kg once a day for 7 days to the study group rats. Control group rats received distilled water with the same regimen. Comparison group rats received 40 mg of alantonum known as a mucolytic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. The fourth group consisted of intact animals. The clinical course of the disease was assessed according to the clinical symptoms, peripheral blood count, O2 and CO2 partial blood pressure, lung tissue histological examination and lipid peroxidation processes intensity and antioxidant enzymes activity. Results. Treatment of experimental bronchopneumonia by dry extract of Gentiana algida at a dose of 200 mg/kg was associated with lower mortality, less severe clinical course, lower respiratory rate. Also, a statistically significant erythrocyte sedimentation rate and white blood cells count decrease was noted, indicating the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract. Partial arterial blood pressure of respiratory gases has normalized, indicating the lung ventilation improvement. The effect of dry extract of Gentiana algida according to the noted parameters was superior to alantonum used as a comparison drug. Anti-inflammatory effect of the tested plant extract might be a result of lipid peroxidation inhibition, confirmed by statistically significant decrease of the peroxidation products (malonic dialdehyde and conjugated dienes) and increase of antioxidant protection enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) activity. Conclusion. Dry extract of Gentiana algida at a dose of 200 mg/kg has a positive effect in treatment of acute experimental bronchopneumonia, promoting the respiratory organs morphologic and functional status normalization in laboratory animals at the earlier stages of the disease.
