Introduction:The long-term effect of training with Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) has been documented to have benefits on health, but its acute role in performance remains unclear. This study evaluated whether a 5-minute WBV warm-up could serve as an effective warm-up to optimize sport performance. Methods:Ninety-three participants healthy, active but not professional athletes, (23.6 ± 5.7 years) were randomized into three groups: control (CG), sham vibration group (SVG), and vibration group (VG). All participants completed tests at two time points (T0 and T1): countermovement jump (CMJ) the primary outcome, reaction time (RT), reactive strength index (RSI), and sit-and-reach (SRT). During assessments, superficial electromyography (sEMG) was recorded to explore potential neuromuscular changes associated with the interventions. Between T0 and T1, the VG performed a 5-minute WBV warm-up, the SVG completed the same warm-up without vibration, and the CG remained at rest. Results:VG improved in the primary outcome, CMJ (p < 0.01), SRT (p < 0.01), and RT (p < 0.01), while RSI remained unchanged (p > 0.05). SVG showed similar improvements (CMJ (p < 0.01), SRT (p < 0.01), and RT (p < 0.01), RSI (p > 0.05), whereas CG experienced a decline in RSI (p < 0.05). Between-group contrasts at the post-test endpoint for the primary outcome (CMJ) showed no statistical significance (all p > 0.05), a finding consistent across all other variables. Conclusion:The proposed 5-minute warm-up protocol, whether performed with or without whole-body vibration, effectively enhanced performance in sport-related tests without inducing a performance decrease. However, WBV did not provide additional benefits over the same warm-up performed without vibration.
Prolonged sitting has been associated with adverse effects on cognitive function, and interrupting sitting with physical activity (PA) may help mitigate these effects. However, evidence regarding the effects of PA breaks on executive function remains limited. In addition, it remains unclear how intervention characteristics may be associated with variations in effect estimates. This study aims to synthesize evidence from randomized trials on the effects of PA breaks on executive function, and to identify potentially effective intervention characteristics through moderator analysis. A systematic search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, APA PsycINFO, and SPORTDiscus from database inception to April 25, 2026, for randomized trials investigating the effects of PA breaks during sedentary time on executive function. Although the eligibility criteria allowed randomized controlled trials, randomized crossover trials, and cluster-randomized trials, all studies included in the final synthesis used randomized crossover designs. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool version 2 for crossover trials, and the quality of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations framework. A random-effects three-level meta-analytic model was applied to analyze main effects, exploratory moderator effects, publication bias, and sensitivity analyses. Twenty-two randomized crossover trials were included, comprising 123 effect sizes from 418 participants. Low certainty evidence suggests that, compared with uninterrupted sitting, PA breaks may be associated with a small improvement in executive function (Hedges’ g = 0.13, 95
Abstract Background Insomnia is a prevalent public health concern with significant consequences for well-being. While physical activity (PA) is recognized as a beneficial non-pharmacological intervention, its precise dose-response relationship with subjective sleep quality remains insufficiently quantified. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the efficacy of PA on subjective sleep quality in patients with insomnia and to quantitatively delineate the dose–response relationship using Bayesian meta-analysis. Methods A systematic search was conducted across Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library from inception to February 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of PA on subjective sleep quality in participants diagnosed with insomnia were included. A Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis was performed to calculate pooled effect sizes (Hedges’g) with 95% Credible Intervals (CrI). Dose–response relationships were modelled using restricted cubic splines to identify minimum and optimal dosages. Dosage was expressed as the weekly volume in MET-minutes (Metabolic Equivalent of Task × minutes/week). The certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results 24 RCTs involving 1,591 participants were included. Bayesian synthesis indicated low evidence that PA significantly improves subjective sleep quality compared with inactive controls (Hedges’g = -0.56, 95% CrI: -0.68, -0.45). Dose–response analysis revealed a non-linear “L-shaped” relationship. Benefits accrued rapidly at lower volumes, with a minimum effective dose estimated at 100 METs-min/week. The therapeutic effect peaked at an optimal dose of approximately 650 METs-min/week (Hedges’g = -0.64, 95% CrI: -0.85, -0.44), beyond which additional volume yielded diminishing marginal returns. Moderation analyses indicated that the effect was more pronounced in adults (Hedges’ g = -1.00) than in older adults (Hedges’ g = -0.51), and was consistent across different diagnostic methods and measurement instruments. Various types of exercise, including aerobic, strength, mind-body, and multicomponent training, all demonstrated beneficial effects. Conclusions Physical activity is an effective treatment for insomnia, characterized by an L-shaped dose–response curve. The relationship is characterized by a rapid initial benefit at low volumes, with a statistically significant response observed at 100 MET-min/week and a plateau in effect occurring at approximately 650 MET-min/week, beyond which additional volume yields diminishing returns. ObjectiveTo examine associations between time-series features of training-load, biochemical, and subjective recovery indicators and relative composite performance in elite speed climbers, and whether these associations differed across conditional performance quantiles.MethodsNine elite speed climbers were monitored for 30 weeks, comprising 15 two-week monitoring periods. Six indicators were analyzed: training strain, training monotony, testosterone, creatine kinase (CK), perceived sleep quality, and soreness. Relative composite performance was represented by a sex-specific athlete-level score ranging from 0 to 1. Missing testosterone and CK values were handled using chained-equation imputation with predictive mean matching. Rolling means and coefficients of variation (CVs) were calculated over four consecutive monitoring periods, yielding 12 candidate time-series features and 108 rolling observations. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) assessed population-averaged associations, while athlete-clustered quantile regression explored associations at τ = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75. False discovery rate correction and sensitivity analyses were applied.ResultsIn the primary GEE analysis, CK rolling CV showed a nominal positive association with performance (β = 0.529, 95% CI 0.061–0.997, P = 0.027), but not after FDR correction (FDR = 0.322). In the six-predictor quantile-regression model, training monotony rolling mean was negatively associated with performance across three quantiles, whereas testosterone rolling mean was positively associated and CK rolling mean negatively associated. These directions were relatively consistent in the extended model and sensitivity analyses. Associations involving training strain, perceived sleep quality, and soreness were less consistent.ConclusionsGEE and quantile regression provided complementary perspectives: GEE characterized population-averaged associations, whereas quantile regression identified differences across the conditional distribution of relative composite performance. Training monotony, testosterone, and CK showed consistent directional patterns. Rolling means and rolling CVs may provide complementary information for interpreting training-load, biochemical, and recovery monitoring in elite speed climbers. These findings require confirmation in samples with repeated objective performance outcomes.
PurposeThe imbalance of muscle strength indicators has a negative impact on players. Lower limb muscle imbalance can cause gait abnormalities and increase the risk of muscle injury or decreased performance in significantly asymmetrical situations. This study aims to assess the lower limb muscle imbalance and gait feature between the dominant and non-dominant sides of badminton players and the associations between the two variables.MethodsThe study included 15 badminton players with years of training experience. Muscle strength and gait parameters were obtained from isokinetic muscle strength testing and plantar pressure analysis systems. The symmetry index was calculated based on formulas such as plantar pressure distribution and percentage of plantar contact area.ResultsIn the isokinetic muscle strength test, significant differences were found in bilateral knee flexors’ average power and total work at 60°/s angular speed. The hamstring to quadriceps ratio (H/Q) range of knee joints of the dominant and non-dominant sides is 0.63–0.74 at low speed, while the H/Q range is 0.81–0.88 at fast speed. The H/Q of bilateral knees increases with increasing angular velocity. As the angular velocity increases, the peak torque to body weight ratio (PT/BW) of the participants’ bilateral knee flexors and extensors shows a decreasing trend. The asymmetry score of H/Q at 180°/s angular speed is positively related with step time and stance time. There are varying degrees of differences in gait staging parameters, plantar pressure in each area, plantar contact area, and symmetry index between the dominant and non-dominant sides of badminton players when walking.ConclusionBadminton players have weaker flexors of the knee joint, imbalanced muscle strength in flexors and extensors, decreased lower limb stability, and a risk of knee joint injury on the non-dominant side. The bending and stretching strength of the knee joint on the dominant side of the players is greater than that on the non-dominant side. The pressure in the first metatarsal region of the dominant side is higher, while that in the midfoot and heel regions is higher on the non-dominant side. badminton players have better forward foot force and heel cushioning ability. Long term badminton sports result in specialized changes in plantar pressure distribution and reduced symmetry.
The relationship among baseline pupil size, fixation stability, and inhibitory control were examined in this study. Participants performed a baseline eye measure in which they were instructed to stare at a fixation dot on screen for 2 min. Following the baseline eye measure, participants completed an antisaccade task to measure inhibitory control ability. We found a correlation between baseline pupil size variability and inhibitory control, as well as between fixation stability and inhibitory control. We showed that participants with better inhibitory control exhibited larger variability in pupil size, and those with better fixation stability showed superior inhibitory control ability. Overall, our results indicate that there are significant correlations between inhibitory control and baseline pupil size, as well as between inhibitory control and fixation stability.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the body composition and somatotype of professional soccer players, investigating variations across categories and playing positions. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted with 51 male professional soccer players in the U-19 and U-20 categories. Data about sex, age, height, and weight were collected between March and May 2023. Body composition analysis utilized the ISAK protocol for the restricted profile, while somatotype categorization employed the Heath and Carter formula. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics V.26, which involved the application of Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests to discern differences in body composition variables and proportionality based on categories and playing positions. The Dunn test further identified specific positions exhibiting significant differences. RESULTS: The study encompassed 51 players, highlighting meaningful differences in body composition. The average body mass in kg was 75.8 (±6.9) for U-20 players and 70.5 (±6.1) for U-19 players. The somatotype values were 2.6-4.6-2.3 for U-20 players and 2.5-4.3-2.8 for U-19 players, with a predominance of muscle mass in all categories, characterizing them as balanced mesomorphs. CONCLUSIONS: Body composition and somatotype findings underscore distinctions in body mass across categories and playing positions, with notably higher body mass and muscle mass predominance in elevated categories. However, the prevailing skeletal muscle development establishes a significant semblance with the recognized somatotype standard for soccer.
